In the decade I've lived out here in the middle of nowhere, we've had maybe two home invasions (both the person's ex, not random strangers) but dozens of housefires. I'd be much more worried about getting trapped in a fire than about an intruder, especially with the response time of the VFD. (No disrespect to them, they do a great job, but residences are just really spread out.)

Stairs can be used as a weapon by throwing you down them, if you don't fall down before then.

I miss the second floor view, but I don't miss hauling stuff up the stairs.
