Why do some prefer to have it there?

One possibility is that it doesn't take up counter space.

I've always had mine at hip level.
My husband was 6 foot, and he used the microwave with no problems whatsoever at all. No matter what he put in he could take out with no spillage. I am 5 foot four, and my solution is to not use the microwave. Works for me. Next house won’t have one.

Mine is over the range, and has a completely useless exhaust fan and inadequate light so it can pretend to be a range hood.
But I like it at eye level.

I've had it both on the counter and mounted above the stove. Above the stove is better because it doesn't take up counter space.

I've never had any trouble taking things in and out from either location. You do need to make sure the container is large enough for whatever you are heating, so you have room to grip it firmly without sticking your fingers in the hot food.

You can tell if it might spill or splash when lifted out, if it spills or splashes while being lifted in. This is a no-brainer.

Heavy things, like big pots of soup, don't go in the microwave. Things like a bowl of soup and a cup of tea are not heavy.

I'm 5'6".

I'm 5'2" and I liked our above-the-range nuker in our last house. Never dumped anything on myself. We had a decent model, and the exhaust fan worked well, too. I wish our current house had the stove on an outside wall so we could install one here, but oh well, a counter-top model has to do.

Had no idea this was such a popular topic and that multiple threads had been devoted to it here on C-D. Therefore I have to add my opinion.

Previous home had a microwave mounted ~5 feet high in an alcove above the counter and I seldom used the darned thing, due to all the reasons mentioned. The embarrassing part is that we actually designed the kitchen cabinets to include this feature, not realizing how relatively useless a microwave is mounted up there, in the sky. Ah well, live and learn.

In our current home the MW is on the counter, where God intended that such an appliance be used.

Am I the only one that ever had a under cabinet mount ? I can't believe that.

I've had countertop, range hood, under-cabinet and drawer microwaves, and my favorite by far is the drawer microwave.

Same here (except we have never had an under-cabinet). The one we have now and definitely our favorite has been the drawer. It's tucked into our island so out of the way and the panel it angled so you can read and use it without bending over.
