I would leave the metal fence as they are expensive to install. I would just stain the brick a darker color and decide later on the fence (don't do something like that until you live there a year and understand how the house functions). A lot of changes are made over time because the house demands it.

Me, I'd drive around the neighborhood and view houses similar to yours and see what color schemes speak to you...

I'd want to do something to that garage door that dominates the front, though...I kind of like the burnt burnt suggestion--or maybe a terra-cotta color...it needs de-emphasizing...

Support your idea of the picket fence--it would soften the whole look..some climbing roses to twine on it?

A picket fence on a mid-mod house is very inappropriate.

After going through the crazy housing market, we finally have a place of our own. I am a First time home buyer and pretty excited to make it look "good". As a first step, I am thinking of painting the exterior. However, I am not sure what color scheme would go well. Few concerns

1. This house has a low sloped roof but most homes in the neghboorhod have a steep slope so the house doesn't stand out as much
2. This house is smaller compared to most homes around so want to make it pop out rather than feel like a tiny box
3. It has some brick parts at the front, and also a brick fence base, right now it's red (and I'll add a white fence later) but not sure which color would look good.
4. There is a tree in the front yard blocking the view, should I get rid of it before painting?

My style is clean, minimal but stylish.
I was thinking white and chocolate but I am totally open to any suggestions.

here are some pics of the house: https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/paint-pj-vj~6629673
Look at the houses next to yours, and choose colors that don't clash with your neighborhood houses. Otherwise your house will become the center of attention to all people around, including criminals.

As some others said: other than required maintenance: (sealing the cracks on the driveway, for example), live in the house for a while before you paint it. Now, there is nothing wrong painting the interior of the house to your liking.

$1,050,000 for 1425 sqft and a 5,000 sqft lot? No thanks!

I'll keep my 4.5 acres, brand new, 2,000 sqft house with 1,800 sqft shop for a third of that!

FWIW, I'd paint it beige with Coral trim.

No need to rush these things.... move in and live there awhile before you go changing things that can't be undone.
Agree w/both these suggestions. Leave the brick and tree as it. (what view is it blocking anyway?)

I think I am going to keep the tree for now or maybe trim it a little.
also paint the entire house with a light color (off white maybe)
I am also thinking about removing that black metal fence and replace it white picket fence.
overall great discussion and thanks for all of your inputs.
I think light colored paint on the house will do alot to brighten it up. Take your time deciding on an accept color if you decide to do one on the exterior.

Black trim looks good with brick, too, BTW. And I'd change out the garage door....

Why are you itching to paint the brick? Every reply has told you, do not paint the brick. People posting with experience.

Honestly, I hate brick. I grew up in a brick front house with white siding. I then lived in a sage green siding house and another that was a blueish grey siding. Guess what my 1st new home was? Full brick front with in your face red brick. I despise it but you know what? It's never occurred to me to paint the brick. I won't own this house forever, the next owner may buy it because it does have brick when the other houses have rock.

I would do the garage door similar to the house color so it doesn't stick out as much.

What sticks out like a sore thumb? The horrible landscaping! That walkway planting is horrible. I'd have it ripped out. Looks like you may have 2 tree roses, leave them, they're usually expensive and hard to grow here in NJ. As was mentioned, an arborist to trim up that tree. I'm unsure if it is a magnolia like most say. You do not want just any tree company to thin it out. I'm glad you're not going to remove it because it will shade the house.

I can see why you dislike the fence, because of the brick base. What were they thinking? It looks like your neighbors have similar though. That would be the only brick I would consider painting, it doesn't even match the house brick.

You could have the walkway ripped out, done with landscaping stones or brick to match the house, add a lighted walkway. You'll see it will make the house brick look like it belongs more.

BTW, here is the post on Houzz. Lots of input there too that OP obviously didn't like so came here.

I like the suggestion you were given at the bottom of Houzz. It would look very attractive. Congratulations on your new beautiful home!
