I would eventually move to a housing unit of 600 sqft or less. Specifically for me, it would be a 1BR condo unit. Others might prefer an open floor plan Studio unit. This is for any type of housing unit as long as we keep it 600 sqft or less. Heck it could be an RV, tiny house, boat and the like.
When I was working and traveling a lot I lived in a 400 S/Ft studio. Murphy bed.
Those were among the happiest days of my life. But I am sort of a minimalist by nature and was working a lot during those days.
I am a different person now, and enjoy my 1900 S/Ft 3-2-2 and its property. If I were single I would have no trouble downsizing to 6 - 700 S/Ft, but I would greatly prefer a stand alone cottage as opposed to my old studio.
As a college student,I have lived my fair share of room less than 600 sq ft,probably 400 sq ft,shared kitchen with the land lady, life is so much simpler. BTW,in the movie Forest Gump, didnt lieutenant Dan live in a studio?with a stove?I lived in one like that in my last year in college

That's me as well -- spending my 20s to early 30s renting a room (NOT 1-BR unit) or studio unit about 400sqft, sometimes bigger but yeah, on average about 400-500 sqft. I preferred the studio unit of course because that has its own bath inside, versus the room I rented which is inside a house with say 3 other rooms being rented out to others. The single bath is co-shared. That's no fun.
You mentioned happiness during those times. And I have been most happiest during those times. Simple lifestyle. And when I need to look for something, there are less space to look into to find it (e.g., phone, key). And yes, no kids back then.
So I guess it's a natural progression for me once the kids are on their own that I go back to that lifestyle.

I once lived in an efficiency apartment. Apartment was 10 feet by 14 feet and bathroom was 5 feet by 6 feet. No stove and no bath tub. Walk in shower for personal cleaning. One sink and counter top where a kitchen would be. Cooking was don with either electric hot plate, toaster oven, electric skillet, slow cooker, or microwave oven. Couldn’t run any of these appliances at the same time because it would trip a breaker. Two next door neighbor apartments. One was 3 Muslim college students and the other was a drug dealing hooker. Stayed there for more than a year.
I grew up in a house with 900 sq ft of living area, 3 brs, 1 bath. My dad built it, he and my mom raised 3 kids there. After I married, my husband and I inherited the house and we raised our 2 kids there.
It was cramped. I very much prefer space. I don’t miss it, and I don’t think I’d be at all happy in 600 sq ft. I guess everyone has different needs and wants.
I bought a 640 sq ft condo around 1990 in Sunnyvale CA. It had a separate bedroom, bath and Maytag stacked washer and dryer. The kitchen was small but OK for one person. At that time I didn't have a husband anyway. I never imagined our marriage would only last 18 months.
I moved out two years later because of harassment from HOA idiots and rented out the condo for the next seven years. By the time I finally sold it I had netted $125k.
The "next" evolution of the Studio apartment will have to accommodate the airspace needed for virtual reality goggle gaming.
That will be an interesting twist.
Fans of the Oculus / Meta Quest 2 will relate.

Guess I could live an a 600 ft house......if in had a 600ft screened porch, and was in a warm climate.
