I've always thought a well built pergola looks cool but considered them a piece of costly yard art because they won't be keeping folks dry if it rains. Now that I'm old and retired with some discretionary income, I can see it might be fun to build one. Question is, do the joists block enough sun to make any significant shade?
I think pergola makes a great, shaded place for family/friends gatherings. I saw some that were enclosed with mosquito net that definitely added to the comfort.
Roof cover can make pergola waterproof inside.

Every pergola we owned had a clear cover on top. The current on which is about 28x18 has also UV protecting sun sails under the rafters during summer. Color matches muted red in some out the house brick.
I recently tore down and rebuilt my east side pergola. It was at least 30 years old and unfortunately the way it was built created it's own demise. I used douglas fir for this one which I stained. The 2x2 rails are evenly spaced. This area is off my bathroom and is an enclosed area with the pergola top. I have a 3 tier fountain in there with several plants and a chair. It provides an incredible amount of shade in my bathroom since my bathroom is all windows. When it rains it does drip through the slats. I wouldn't recommend a pergola for a patio cover because the rain does drip through. For my use, it's perfect.

I think it is used more for privacy. I have often seen them with vines growing up them and on top. It makes nice shade when you do that. If you don't need shade or privacy there isn't really any reason to have a pergola. I have one my mother put up next to a gate that I am going to take down. The gate in my back yard goes into my brother's back yard and her dogs used to fight with his dogs. So the pergoal with an extra gate made a space the dogs couldn't get to each other. Now he doesn't have dogs and my dog wouldn't fight with a flee, so I plan on taking it down and replacing the gate with a metal art gate that will improve the value to both our properties.
