My DH is on a mission now. He reminds me of Bill Murray in Caddyshack. He will spend more time today getting to the bottom of the missing mousetrap saga. Yesterday, it was 20 degrees and he was in there in his underwear (whole different saga) so today he'll be more thorough.
I like the idea about putting the bait outside instead of inside...makes sense.

Sounds like what you have is an even bigger predator. Maybe a coon, a rat, or snake that you just haven't found yet.

I want to agree with you, but no way could something that big get in without causing noticible damage. I'll look for signs, though.

I've seen a rat snake (about 3-1/2 feet long) go through chicken wire (on the way in - not on the way out!), so don't count on that.

But the traps themselves would present a problem, much as the swallowed egg kept the rat snake from going OUT through the chicken wire . . .

You have mice (usually the beady eyed little field mice) and you have RATS. The mice are getting caught, the rats are collecting the serving plates.

I don't mean to laugh at your dilemma.....but that is the funniest post of the day on C-D.

Good luck!

I know, right?

Harry-would the rat carry off the trap though? It makes sense that something bigger might be gobbling up the little critters.

DH (full clothed) says there was only one mouse today, so maybe we're getting ahead off the problem.

Even though we live in the country, we've never seen a rat. We aren't farmers, so there are other places around that would be more attractive to them.

Yeah, rats can do that. I put out some glue traps under the house once. Found a couple of them outside and empty. Rats can be around even if you aren't farming. I see them scurrying away when bushhogging.
