So, somebody repped me about this post, so I will put a lid on it. On Easter Sunday, in 2010, we finally, after 3+ years, sold our house in the country, to two women who had no clue about how much maintenance was involved in the place, with which we had a love/hate relationship. When times were good, we could keep up with the maintenance, which required hired help.
We raised our "baby" in that house and hubby ran his business out of it. Until the bottom fell out of our particular business, which coincided with the collapse of the real estate bubble, we had a wonderful life there. We got out a few years too late.
Anyway, we are retired now, and live in GA. Hubby has a part time job and we are enjoying a small yard and no snow.

Good to know you are now living in a place that's less demanding and thanks for putting an end to the story. I read the thread, hoping to to finally know what happened to the disappearing mice and the traps. Now I'm wondering if the two women who bought the house are having the same issue.

They probably are, and so is anyone who lives in the country, living among the creatures who try to stay warm and survive the winter. We had so many mouse nests in the cars, and garage and a few times, in the house, and mice making nests where they weren't supposed to, that I'm sure the new owners do too. I do know that the carefully maintained landscaping we had has gone to pot.
We loved the close association with nature that we had there. We were on 7 acres, surrounded by woods, so we had a lot of wildlife which we lived with companionably, for the most part...Deer, coyotes, fox, turkeys, owls, and water birds on the pond. We were so happy to get free of it, but we do miss the animals.

I know we'll never know now, but if I had to guess I'd say there was a snake somewhere that was getting fat off dead mice.

Don't snakes eat the whole mouse, including the head?

I've read they do but if they ate the entire trap that's one snake whose path I'd never like to cross.

They would if a trap wasn't attached to it. I've used some traps that break the mouse's neck pretty well to the point where I'm sure it wouldn't take much to rip it off.

Could have also been a rat. If it was my property I'd probably set up a live trap or a rat trap and use the dead mouse as bait.

Of course, old thread, OP's moved....we will never know. But I'm curious to know

I too am catching mice and losing traps and all. I can't begin to figure it out. There is NO place big enough for the traps to go thru. The mice are not starving as we have chickens and pigs. What else that can fit thru a mouse hole could take the entire bodies and traps?

I agree with calling in the pros. Get an exterminator out there before you have mice inside the house.
