my experience with texas DL places has been horrendous due to the large lines and slow clerks.

Where in Houston would one go that has a minimal line and what day of the week do you think would be best?

I live in Katy and don't mind driving a bit if it means I don't have to wait in a long smelly line.

My hubby went a month ago to Alvin because he heard it was slow. Nope! 2 hour wait to renew his license that he had for 10 years. Only 2 people working the counter. If possible, try to renew online.

I live in Katy too and drove to Columbus. I walked in and was the first person in line and walked out five minutes later. I know it seems far but I was willing to drive further out to avoid the problems you mentioned.

Good advice. I was going to tell him Brenham; there is one on 290 in Brenham that NEVER has a wait. 30-40 min drive each way, you may spend that much time waiting in line in Houston. Columbus may be closer to Katy than Brenham, though.

Just at the Conroe DMV this past Wednesday to get a replacement license. At 3:30, the place was packed. You quickly get a number, then wait. Got out of there at 5:15. The A/C was working and the employees were pleasant, so I guess I can't complain too much. Use online process where you can....

I'm seriously considering going to Columbus... I wonder if Sealy would be any better? I could always drive by and take a look at the line.

I've had to go 2 times this past year - once to renew, and once because I lost the newly renewed license

First time I went 15 mintues before they closed on a Monday (in Humble), was out 10 mintues later. The second time I went 15 minutes before they closed on a Friday (the weekend of 4th of July - like I said, I lost my license and we were about to make a road trip) and it was about 45 minutes total.

In my experience, DPS offices in more rural areas generally have very fast/small lines (smaller wait) and a bad time to go is during the start of summer when a lot of teen-agers are off from school and getting their drivers licenses/permits.

The Rosenberg DPS office is going to have a longer line than the Monahans, TX DPS office.

I was actually at the Huntsville DPS office the other day (I think Monday) at about 4 PM. 1. I was the only patron there. When I pulled up I thought they were closed initially as there were no cars in front. and 2. The guy in charge of all DPS offices in the State of Texas was there checking up on the place and having a little Q&A session with the DL technicians on duty. He said he visited 3 DPS offices that day, of which I think Conroe was one. Very sharp dude. I think Director of the Driver License Division of the Texas DPS was his proper title/position.
