My husband took a job in Kingwood. I've visited a few times and spent the weekend and early this week looking over the Woodlands, Spring, and some parts of Conroe.

I don't wait to bash my hometown, but I hate what it's become. I have no idea what areas to look for anymore. I'm living right now near UTSA, I work at the other branch downtown and I love my home here.

The Woodlands is too congested. Conroe is too weird. 300K homes next to trailer parks?! I have friends who warn me about Humble. Where else is there to live?

If I could I would live in the Heights. Alas, it's too darned expensive.

Again, sorry for the slights to Houston. I just really feel disappointed after going back there for a week.

The Heights has gentrified quite a bit in the last few years, if you are willing to go to a few "faux-Heights" locations that haven't quite gotten to that level yet, check out Sunset Heights, Brookesmith & Lindale Park. Unfortunately though, when you talk about $300k houses next to train wrecks, well....

You are not interested in Kingwood proper?

Well...the fact is we looked around Kingwood and there's nothing there that interests us. We're Dinks...so we don't have kids and aren't into the typical 'family activities'. I'll look into the faux heights Thanks!

Kingwood...well....the fact that the closest theater (and I'm talking a movie theater, not the Alley or something) and shopping ...look so crappy...

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be so insulting. I'm surrounded by shopping and reasonable housing with nice neighbors in San Antonio. I'm spoiled I think.

Plus the new houses in Kingwood are out of our range (some of the older places might be okay). But the people we met there seem unfriendly and snobby to be honest. Very money and status driven.

Again, please forgive my assumptions. I really want to enjoy coming back home so to speak.

From Kingwood to the Heights is a big leap culturally. What is your price range? If you want to be close in, you might be better off staying where you're at. The desirable areas inside the Loop start around $300K and only go up... waaaay up. Heights area zip codes: 77007, 77008, 77009. Check har.com

sounds like you need to move to river oaks, I was "dink'n" in kingwood for 8 years (bear branch) and thought it was perfect.

working in kingwood and living to the west wouldnt be to desirable, the commute would suck.

I wouldn't write off Humble. There's supposed to be some nice neighborhoods out there.

I'll try to rethink Humble, but much like Houston, it's a confusing hodge podge of places I'd like to forget about and mcmansions...heheheh

I didn't think about River Oaks...though I don't think we can afford that. I was hoping for something under 200K. Who knows, maybe River Oaks isn't as expensive as it was back in the day.

We can't stay in San Antonio. DH's job is in Kingwood and we cannot afford two homes. I make less money than he, so I have to suck it up. Otherwise that would be a good option

I can't believed that you did not find something in Kingwood. Did you go by yourself? Call Connie Moreno 281 358-2101. She is a Realtor who had been in Kingwood for a LONG time. She really knows that area better than anyone I know. Working in Kingwood and living there is a great advantage. Good Luck!

Honestly if the hodge-podge, block-by-block adventure thing works your nerves, then a master planned community like Kingwood or Woodlands is about your only alternative.

Its just how Houston is, especially closer in. And btw, no River Oaks is waaaay pricier than it used to be. Almost anything under 7 digits is facing South Shepherd or being advertised as a tear down.

If you don't have kids you might want to consider living closer in to get better access to restaurants, nightlife, etc. But, you will have to get your mind around the hodge-podge factor.
