Why do we get these questions daily in this forum? People flock to this city and claim that it's great diversity is one of the things that attracted them to Houston but the first thing they want to do is find where the most of "their people" live so they can start looking for housing there.

Asian, Hipster, Pakistani, Black, LGBT, Cali refugees, etc etc etc... why do these people all ask the same questions? If the diversity if this city gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling then why do you automatically search for a place with lots of people just like you to live in?

I'm guessing this is similar to those who complain about Houston's diversity, yet also complain when they travel/relocate that they can't find decent Tex-mex or that "real" chili doesn't have beans.

Because you're moving to a new city and absent local knowledge one has to assume that if a certain demographic likes living in a particular spot I might like living there too.

Once you get here and live here awhile, you might change your mind but in the meantime the safe bet is good move, pun intended.

Because it's possible to enjoy diversity as well as the comfort of being around people you have more in common with.

You are not understanding what diversity means to them.

It means I won't be the only minority in my neighborhood. It means I won't get stared at when I go to a restaurant and eat. It means I can live the american dream without people giving me roadblocks.

Moving to a new area is hard already. A support network is extremely useful, especially if you don't know the language or understand the culture. Being able to sit down and have a bowl of Wonton noodle when you are an Asian for example is extremely comforting.

If it's all that uncomfortable for them, they're more than welcome to stay in their nice and comfortable original home lands.

How interesting, do you believe that's possible for everyone?

Everyone? That's a pretty big generalization.

I know when I moved here, I had my ideas of what I wanted, but used my co-workers as a reference and ended up settling in an area where there were a few people from my company at already.

Look at it this way, if you, and I'm assuming you're a typical caucasian, moved to Beijing tomorrow, how would you decide where to go/live? The easiest way would to be to talk to people who are the most like you, since they've probably gone through a similar process. That doesn't mean you want everything to be just like home, it just that it provides a frame of reference into what can be a totally alien landscape.

I didn't know you were a native american.

Pretty dumb thing to say. An american don't have to be white and like apple pie.
