So lets use that then. In a 4 month time period, we had 146 murders. Youd need to multiply that by 3 to get the projected total for the year. That would be 438. In 2020, there were 404 murders in Houston. That would put our murder rate at 19.0 per 100,000.

Yes thats higher than what wed like as any person who loses their life unnecessarily is a tragedy, but we can do without the drama.
From the time that article was written we’ve easily had 10 more since

Ok, but we have to have a firm time period to preform a projection. January 1 to April 30 is 4 months so that allows us to take the total count and project it.

If we had 146 murders in 120 days that means we should expect about 1.2 murders every day or about 6 every 5 days. So Im sure we have had more than 10 murders since that article was written.

You take the number of murders and divide them by the population. Then you multiply by 100,000.
Where are you getting an up to date count? I Don’t see it on HPD’s website. So how do we factor in FBCSO and HCSO stats since they overlap? My point is your data is flawed.

I took a trip to Houston to visit family two weeks ago. I chose the wrong hotel because I wasn't familiar with the area. All I have to say is thank god for conceal carry. I have worked Law Enforcement in an urban city and I did not feel safe where I stayed.

Its by city, not by metro area. I dont factor in anything other than what occurs in Houston's city limits as well as the others.

Here is an article with a tool that shows the murders as of December 29, 2020. Murders from Houston that took place in Fort Bend County are included.

https://abc13.com/houston-2020-murde...se-in/9178057/

From this point, we were able to see that 7 additional murders took place December 30 and 31. One of those was a domestic issue where a man killed three relatives and turned the gun on himself.

That left us with a murder rate of 18.7 and yes that includes parts of Houston that are not in Harris County. The data is not flawed. Its well reported in the media, provided to them by law enforcement, and from there its simple math.

We beat Dallas!

More directly to the topic at hand - crime is up all over the country due to economic instability from the pandemic. I have yet to see any data point to this trend being particularly worse in Houston relative to other US metropolitan areas.

And that’s my point.

Not that we can’t do better, not that the loss of innocent life isn’t a problem, and not that things aren’t increasingly worse. But we have to put these things in perspective, look at comparable cities, national trends, and the like. Houston’s murder rate isn’t good, but it doesn’t stand out either.

Wish we could say the same for human trafficking. We’ve got a MASSIVE problem there.

People have nothing to lose, let alone nothing to do so they're showing out with the crime. Best thing for Houstonians to do is stay strapped because you never know when you could be a potential victim.

Since when does the crime have to be murder in order for it to be considered an issue? The OP posted data that shows an increase in murder. It shouldn't have to stand out amongst the worst in the nation to be taken seriously or for residents to be concerned.
Let's talk about perspective when one of our loved ones ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Being concerned is of course ok. But that is not specific to Houston.
