Yeah, they don't know if they are Southern or not. It would be better if Texas was its own country, then this topic wouldn't be discussed.

This issue can be complex. I think in the end, it's all a matter of opinion, and no official textbook is out on the subject.
Have you ever been further west in the state? Sure, in Houston, you can find many of the somewhat stereotypical images of Texan culture, so there is that twist, but honestly, compared to the rest of the state, Houston leans much more towards southern than it does "Texan". Houston even looks more like Louisiana and Florida than it does Austin or Dallas.

When I think "Texan", I think of cities like Austin, Waco, Bryan-College Station, etc; cities that are really rather neutral, in a lot of ways, and can't be called anything but "Texan".

And while they're generallly more relaxed, what you'll hear from native Houstonians is a drawl; not a twang.

Been there done that, Texas was already its own country befoe it joined the United States. Why do you think Texans are so arrogant when it comes to their state.

Texas is surrounded by Southern, Central and Southwestern states. But don't even try to pigeon hole Texas under any of those labels. Texan will do just fine. And this New Yorker loves that about Texas! And Houston is not "the South". Biloxi is the South. Mobile is the South. Pensacola is the South. Jackson is the South...not Houston. Houston is Texan.
Anybody who doesn't think Texas is not the south needs to get out of the city more, and go to places like Longview, Crockett, Hempstead, Hearne. I think living in Houston sometimes blinds people to what the rest of the state really is.

OP - With a population over 4 million, you aren't going to get one answer on this, as though the whole city is unanimous opinion.

I disagree completely that Houston - as a whole - thinks it's not a southern city. I've lived here for decades, and it sure is southern to me. But of course, others disagree. So there is no consensus on this, and it would be foolish to expect that.
