Man, there was some serious dirt moving going on there.

BTW - I've been in some of those caves under the city (the National Speleological Society took our caving group). We were told Huntsville used to be known as "Cave City".

Downtown is designated as the area between California on the east, Governors on the south,
Memorial Parkway to the west and Pratt to the north. There are plenty of areas that will support whatever someone might want to build or need
I've been here most of my life ... moved here in 1966 ... and the downtown "skyline" has not changed appreciably since then. There seems to be no desire from our good ole boy officials to have any tall buildings at all downtown. I'm surprised that the town has been able of grow at all ... it's in spite of government, not because of them. As I said earlier, our skyline looks like a town of 25,000.

And this is exactly why we've been growing Out instead of Up. The fun things coming to the city and different developments should make up for it. I expect a tall skyline along 565 in the 2020s.

Yawn.

The companies expanding or moving here, causing the area to continue to grow, are defense, rocket, space and manufacturing related. Blue Origin, GE Aviation, Boeing, Remington, to name just a few, are not going to build a building downtown. That makes no sense. They want to locate on the arsenal, at research park, at redstone gateway or near the airport, where there is plenty of land. You need banks, financial companies, insurance companies, health care, etc. to have major employment downtown, and that just isn't going to happen here. I imagine we'll get a decent building or two at some point, but we won't be competing with Nashville or Birmingham for number of skyscrapers any time soon.

Yes, that's all true as I'm well aware (worked in aerospace for over 40 years), but it's also a sign of the times. Not many taller buildings are being built anywhere, except some in NYC and places like Dubai. Look at Los Angeles ... many millions of people and a really poor skyline. But you hit the nail on the head mentioning our lack of banking and other financial business. Birmingham grew up many years ago when things like tall buildings were more in vogue (and it was even here, being the reason the Times building downtown was built), but population-wise they've been regressing for some time.

The height limit in Huntsville's Central Business District (CBD) as far as I know is 10 stories. Back in 2009 there was discussion of removing that restriction. Since I can't find any mention of it since that time I assume that nothing has changed since then.

Note the tallest building in Huntsville is the Regions Center. It is 189ft tall and has 11 stories. It was built in 1990. There are several buildings in Huntsville that are 10-12 stories but none are as tall as the Regions Center.
