Huntsville by all indications will bypass Birmingham in the next few years and become the largest city in Alabama. However, Birmingham's metro are is much larger and will most likely be the largest in Alabama for many years to come.

Huntsville Population
2000 = 158,216 (−1.0%)
2010 = 180,105 (13.8%)
Est. 2017 = 194,585 (8.0%)

Urban = 286,692
Metro = 455,458

Birmingham Population
2000 = 242,840 (−8.7%)
2010 = 212,237 (−12.6%)
Est. 2017 = 210,710 (−0.7%)

Urban = 749,495
Metro = 1,149,807

Well with Birmingham’s 7 counties they should.
Huntsville just has two so it’s not an even comparison.
Atlanta’s metro is significantly larger than Birmingham.
Atlanta metro has more than the whole state of Alabama.

I wonder when Decatur MSA will be added to Huntsville’s MSA. That would create a significant increase (~150,000) overnight and I think all of us consider Decatur as part of the HSV metro area.

Birmingham's metro is about 5500 square miles (over 10% the area of the entire state).

Huntsvilles is about 1200 square miles.

If the Huntsville Metro is ever redefined, as it should be, to include Decatur and Morgan County, and probably Marshall County too, the numbers will be closer. Very few people don't think of the "Huntsville/Decatur Area" as being one.

There's a huge visible difference in the two places, but a lot of that is because B'ham has 4 Interstate highways that pass directly through, while Huntsville has none. Also, a significant number of people work on a restricted military base instead of downtown.

It will have to happen sometime pretty soon. It's obvious a lot of Decaturites work in Huntsville. Just watch the incoming traffic jam on 565 every morning and outgoing in the late afternoons.

Metro definitions were redefined some months ago, and B'ham now only has 6 counties. Walker County was removed. Huntsville remained the same. See Page 44 here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-conten...etin-18-04.pdf

To be fair, Jefferson County ALONE is bigger than the Huntsville MSA...

Fair enough, and Birmingham has to deal with 35! separate municipalities in Jefferson County which also skews the city population. Madison county has 6.

What makes up the annual Census estimates are determinations made by the number of residential certificates of occupancy issued. If we were using that as a baseline due to the number of units from the sudden increase in multifamily developments then Birmingham would still remain the largest municipality in the state. However, those figures are not accurate. Atlanta was overestimated last decade by 100K residents by the 2009 annual estimates, but revealed to be only 15K more residents than its 2000 count in 2010. That's why there so little validity in those guesstimates.

Things have drastically changed in the past 9 years in both cities, but more so in Birmingham with the uptick in redevelopment.
With the 2020 Census, I still see Birmingham being Alabama's largest municipality.

it will definitely be interesting. it's undeniable the amount of residential growth in the downtown and "downtown-adjacent" neighborhoods in birmingham. but as was mentioned, are the other neighborhoods in the city still hemorrhaging residents such that the overall net loss/gain is flat, or has that leveled off by now?
