Fri 27Aug 11aEDT/10aCDT: Winds 65mph(100km/h), moving NW 15mph(24km/h), pressure 996mb. TS winds extend out to 90miles (150km) from center. Cuba changes Western areas with TS Warning to Hurricane Warning. Satellite shows storms firing over/near center. Radar shows Storm trying to wrap convection around its core which will help it fight off wind shear in the region. Outflow is improving (think exhaust system for car, more outflow = better for storm). NHC now has as 120mph into Louisiana. Once storm passes W Cuba, it should have optimal conditions to rapidly strengthen. US Hurricane, TS and Surge Watches will change to Warnings later today…nothing will have really changed, it’s just timing based (with 36hours or less).
The USAF Hurricane Hunters based out of Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS) are departing for San Antonio, TX where they’re base missions into Ida from to protect crew and equipment. https://www.403wg.afrc.af.mil/News/A...cal-storm-ida/
Fri 2pEDT/1pCDT: Ida makes landfall onto island South of Cuba, Isle of Youth. Mainland Western Cuba next which isn’t very mountainous so not expecting too much disruption. No other real changes.
