All of this brings me neatly on to the Hyundai i40, which is a medium-sized saloon car from a giant Korean corporation. It was designed to match the Toyota Avensis and the Volkswagen Passat, and it does so in every way. Which means it's right up there with your dishwasher and your tumble dryer and your boiler as a household product that should - and hopefully will - give many years of faithful service.

However, I can't see anyone buying Hyundai's newest car - the Veloster.
Because, if you are not interested in cars, you will wonder why it has two doors on one side and only one on the other. And why it has scoops on the bonnet, and why it costs £17,995 when for two-thirds of that you can buy a Hyundai i10, which is easier to park and uses less fuel.
20,000 mile update on my 11 Elantra. About 2 months ago the "leather" steering wheel started wearing where my left hand holds it. Now about 6 inches of the "leather" coating has flaked off and a tacky plastic is underneath.
Several scratches in the windshield from using wipers in the rain. Best tank of gas about 35 mpg highway. Average mpg 29 to 31 combined. The 40 mpg claim is pure fiction. I have used every gas saving technique even filling up at on and off ramp stations to try and see 40 mpg just once.
I don't think I would buy this car again. In contrast, my wife's 12 Toyota Highlander has exceeded expectations and delivers the highway mpg in combined driving without gas-saving techniques used.

I owned Hyundais 20 years a go -- two of them -- and loved them.
Never had an issue. Always have thought they're great cars, and got a bad and undeserved reputation for supposedly being 'cheap.'

I'm taking the car in for service on Tuesday. I'm curious to hear their explanation for steering wheel flaking off. It is annoying as it is very tacky when it's warm and feels like you're holding onto something that someone spilled soda or juice all over.
They already told me there was nothing they could do about the wind shield. I guess I shouldn't have turned on the wipers in the rain. Lol.
The service manager told me several customers have been disappointed about the mpg issue. This was a major reason for me choosing this brand and I've noticed they are no longer showcasing the 40 mpg figure in their ads.
It's a comfortable car and rides nice but I am concerned about how well it is going to hold up. It is less than 1 year old. I may decide to trade it since the trade in value is not much below what I paid.
A recent Auto News article pointed out that Honda & Toyota sell under 10% of their cars to rental agencies, roughly one-third of the Detroit 3.
That is not correct. In MY2010, Toyota leased 141,080 to commercial fleets, over 17% of total registrations, the overwhelming majority to rental fleets and slightly below the 22% average.
Personally, I think their participation in the corporate fleet is understated. The customer service handling fleet sales at Toyota is so bad that fleet managers get frustrated and go through dealerships.

Came very close to buying a 2012 Elantra. The main reason I didn't is because I read many owners reviews about this very thing you mentioned....the mpg never achieving what was advertised.
I bought a 2012 Mazda 3 touring w/skyactiv instead. Have heard nothing but good about this vehicle.

I took my 11 Elantra in for service today. They said they would replace the steering wheel once under warranty but the flaking off of the "leather" was normal wear. The car was 9 months old when it started to flake off.
They also said the numerous scratches on the windshield are normal and due the abrasiveness of road dust. I had to laugh because we've had little rain/snow over the past year and I've probably used the wipers less than two dozen times. The car is clean and kept in the garage.
I hope you have better luck with your Mazda. These problems are relatively minor but coupled with the disappointment in mpg I will buy something else next time.
hyundai makes better looking cars now than some japanese and american makers. their warranty is good but the resale value sucks.
