The megaloads hearing has wrapped up in Boise:
Megaloads hearing wraps up; decision due in June - Spokesman.com - May 11, 2011

The main argument coming from the oil company lawyers about the trial run (see my post above) was that it didn't follow the permit, and so a real trial run hasn't been conducted! So the fact that it took 3 weeks rather than 3 days doesn't seem to matter much . Hmmmm....
There is another hearing on the megaloads in Montana Monday May 16.

I think the opponents may as well wrap it up. The governor and his cronies in ITD are willing to perform any kind of ethical contortions to appease the oil company.

New development: They may decide to bypass the US entirely with their megaloads and go by rail to the Alberta oil sands!

Megaloads could skip U.S. on rail-truck Canada route - Spokesman.com - May 26, 2011

Quote:
The new alternative: Instead of coming to Idaho, megaloads could be shipped from Korea through the Panama Canal, up around the United States to Hudson Bay on the east coast of Canada, and from there west by rail, with a final segment by truck.

From the above:

Rolheiser said his company didn’t consider the Port of Churchill for its current project because “we kind of had to look at the routes and infrastructure that currently exist.”

Now, I'm reading between the lines here, but I think the gentleman meant to say, "We didn't know those darn Americans would cause so much trouble for us."

According to the article, it would take 12 months or less to upgrade the Canadian rail lines to accommodate megaloads... with all the delays on the US side I'm sure somebody is wishing they'd have thought of this sooner.

Cue the Canadian railroad music!

New scenario: the megaloads may be going up 95 to CdA and then eastward on 90:
Shortened megaloads may be coming to Coeur d'Alene - Spokesman Mobile - June 8, 2011
But just like the Highway 12 plan there are apparently no provisions for glitches.....

Another article on the megaloads going up the 95 and then onto the 90 today. So if you are driving around at 2 in the morning expect up to a 15 minute delay.
