I have been to Ellis island as a tourist with my immigrant wife and it really connected with her because the story of those Irish immigrants so many years ago resonated with her story.
Back then there were 3 things that an Immigrant had to display to get into the country.
They had to be healthy and not carrying a disease or they were put back on the boat.
They had to have the means to take care of themselves or have a job skill/trade where that they could use so they would not become a burden on the state.
Or they had to have a sponsor that would take care of them so they would not become a burden on the state.
What has changed in our society that we willingly and unwillingly welcome in millions of people that cannot take care of themselves? They do become a burden on the nation and a drain on the taxpayers.
What has changed is the Democrat party and their desire for a new and loyal voter base.

Those requirements always were and still are on the books; we just don't enforce them. My hope is that we will come to a federal regulation that says 'unless you are a United States citizen, you are NOT eligible for publicly funded benefits.' Many states disburse these funds w/out regard to immigration status.
Adding to the problem, the people who are granted temporary protected status are almost always poor and uneducated and after they have a US citizen child, the child becomes eligible for benefits, so the family lives on the public dime. Thankfully, many of those programs are terminated as of 2020. Now, whether these folks will 'go home' or not remains to be seen.
Other countries have similar rules for immigrants. No healthcare or benefits of any kind.
People should go to the Ellis Island website and look for their relatives on the ship manifest. I saw my grandfather listed. He arrived in 1913 at the age of 24 and lived with his brother. He was short, only 5'5" with brown hair, blue eyes and in good health.
True Story: Gramps worked in the coal mines at 12 yrs old pops in construction as a teenager.
Gramps and pops came separately to this country with pennies in their pockets.
You can read my other posts on my pop meeting his dad for the first time when he was a teenager.
People like them were the true hard working immigrants that came to this country to work not freeload.
Basically told sink or swim. Few of my relatives who came here could not make it here in
this country and went back home to theirs.
That's the way it was. That's the way it should be.
Oh, almost forgot... No government or city help of any kind .......period.....period......period......
Like the old saying goes
Sometimes you eat the bear.
Sometimes the bear eats you.
Amen.
Today people would be outraged! What do you mean no help???? No free food, no free housing ??? I'm offended!

They're not looking for a greater workforce and tax payers?
I hate DT but I'm mostly okay with this. What I am against is that it seems to count things like Medicare as welfare.
I would invite you to come to Houston, Tex (or any major city). The amount of immigrants who qualify for FREE Medicare & Medicaid is SHOCKING! Because they didn’t work in this country and some worked “under the table”, their income was VERY LOW. Even if they didn’t work the required 40 quarters for Social Security, they still qualify for SSI and the FREE Medicare. Trump should go after those too. They are stealing from Americans who worked here all of their lives.
