I agree with you, it is just that some of the same people yapping that to equate illegal immigrants with hispanics is racist yet are the first to demand Spanish be given official status in the US due to all of the immigrants that speak it....

Not really. If it's a conversation within themselves, it should be up to them. If you are eavesdropping, then that's your fault. Now once a non Spanish speaker joins the conversation, the Spanish speaking needs to stop if the subjects are fluent in English. It's common courtesy. Don't confuse lack of assimilation with rudeness.

I didn't read any of this but I just wanted to say that America doesn't have an official language to begin with.

We don't need a second language and the only thing that should be done about illegals is the legal part;enforce the law.No more amnesty;that was done in the 80's and didn't help.

<<But I think it would be easier to assimilate Spanish speaking illegals into our large and growing middle class if Spanish was America’s official second language>>

No doubt you're right, but we don't want to assimilate illegals. We want them deported.

Its a real tragedy that our elected officials have thrown their hands up at this idea. I find it interesting that this generation is so willing to quit and tell themselves that 'it cant be done'.

I think our military earned for us the right to speak English, and English only:

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.' You could have heard a pin drop. Yes, they have that choice but why do they do it? It is a non-assimilation factor to not speak the language of this country out in public IMO. Eavesdropping? Hardly, everywhere you go they are speaking Spanish only. There is no way to avoid hearing it. They are speaking in Spanish to their school-aged kids all the time. How does this help their kids assimilate in school?
