If NOT for steady employment with non-transferable job, long term friends and family, I would move. I don't hate it here, but would love to combine milder climate, lower COL and more moderate & less corrupt government.

Pretty much my reasons as well but I am getting to the point where I hate it here.

I haven't travel much but I lived in the Northwest suburbs of Illinois then 'the bank' the owned my house and me parted ways, I ended up on the Southside of Chicago-the not great part. Here it is, 10 years ago a friend told me I should move to Atlanta,Georgia with him,
i didn't.
Gawd what an idiot.(if its not obvious I mean me)

City conveniences aside, be careful what you ask for. I've lived in some of those states with balanced budgets, low taxes, and small population. Services such as county health departments are underfunded and understaffed. Most don't really understand sanitation issues and poor medical care until there is a medical crisis. It's why we moved back.

I don't worry about a filthy hospital, the medical merry-go-round, or untrained doctors who don't know the difference between cancer and thumbprint on an X-Ray. There were 18 visits to 3 doctors and one to ER. None, not even a surgeon was smart enough to culture a wound. It was MRSA.

If you move to one of these states you simply cannot live rural. You live near the largest town and pray you chose well. Heart hospital sent spouse home with infected legs after surgery. Yeah it can happen in any hospital, but. If there are high sanitation standards in place, the odds of no or low infections are much better.

Linicx has some good points regarding health care. We left Illinois/ Chicago suburbs and now reside about 1/2 way between Rapid city, SD and Gillette, WY. Within an hour we can arrive in either location.
Regarding the good Dr. vs. bad Dr. you can run into either one no matter where you go but, at a larger hospital you 'll have more specialists.
As far as leaving Illinois, the down side being lack of dining diversity, and our friends, the upside is unlimited.
We got disgusted by the crime, politics, and outrageous taxes in Will county, can't see how one could possibly consider retiring there due to the property taxes.

I have been here most of my life, and could probably still squeak by, but there are SO many other states in the u.s. which appear to have a better grip on their economy.
I've noticed that as well, which is quite a switch from historical patterns the past 50 years. The people who are the happiest in Illinois seem to be in the city right now. To be extremely general, I feel like some of the happiest or most content with their situation in this state are white people who are living in the city.

I'll be envious in winter, but 90+ degrees for 5 months straight is not "great" to me. I like Lake Michigan air conditioning periodically during our NE Illinois summers.
