They above is a list of factors that were NOT part of their walkability equation. So public transportation is not considered, nor is weather, safety, traffic calming devices, etc. Pure and simple they use google maps to calculate the number of options you have for obtaining necessities in a specific radius around a given address...and they assume a half-mile walk to a small convenience store is the same as one to a 24-hour grocery store, even if an 8-lane interstate high-way runs in between.

So, needless to say, there are plenty of problems with blindly accepting their results, but with that in mind, it's still very useful.
Hmmm.......I see what you're saying, but they mention public transportation all over the place, even here:

What does my score mean?
Your Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:
90–100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
70–89 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.
50–69 = Somewhat Walkable: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.
25–49 = Car-Dependent: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.
0–24 = Car-Dependent (Driving Only): Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!

So I guess they don't look for the public transportation, they just assume when it would be needed .

Again, I think it's confusing you cause you're not quite looking at it from the right angle. As the ratings get worse, you NEED public transportation to get around.

The top rating means you can get by without anything but your feet. As it gets worse, they say you'll need a bike or public transit to get around because your essentials are farther away. The very worst rating says you need your car because you have to drive so far that nothing, not even transit, would be adequate. Make more sense now?

Try reading this line again and maybe it will click. "50–69 = Somewhat Walkable: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car."
