Equifax owns a service they call "The Work Number" that provides independent verification of employment for subscribing companies, banks, lenders, etc. It is complete with salary information, job title, dates of employment, and so forth. I use it on all applicants post phone screen, and have since 2006. More and more employers and payroll services are reporting to this database, which makes it very convenient - I can generally verify 80-90% of employment history in minutes.
Old Tired Man : if you'd like to PM me, I can provide you instructions on how to pull your own report, so you can see what I'm referring to. Believe me, it is FAR more detailed than what you think it is.
I did have a background check run with my last company. Employment history (company, position, dates employed, and reason for leaving), educational history, felony convictions, SSN verification, and address verification were all included.
I have a listing with every year worked and total earnings for that year, no employer's info is mentioned at all...no dates, no quit or was fired...but if they wanted to, I'm sure they can find out everything about a person.
As I stated. My experience in hiring hundreds of people over the last 7 years shows that roughly 80-90% of a person's employment history is going to show, so be very careful that information you submit matches reality, particularly if its a larger company, or they use a mainstream payroll processing company.
Third party vendors are used to run the whole background package, not just verifying employment - obviously the world has evolved a bit since you retired.
Correct. The SSA will release that info, but it's rarely used.
More prevalent is Equifax's service that many employers report to, which can be accessed quickly, cheaply and is used regularly. Provides just about the same information.
Interesting I thought most used Lexis Nexus, but I think they are more detailed and more expensive.
Isn't it illegal to report employees salary information to Equifax without employee's consent? That can't be happening!!!
Perfectly legal.
