Why do you insist on simply scraping by?

Everything taken together is the package that you present to a potential employer, and the little things might be tie breakers.

If you and I applied for the same job, I would submit a full résumé accompanied by cover letter, include references up front, polish my dress shoes and send a Thank you.

You would submit a cover paragraph, 'forget' to attach the résumé, not provide references unless requested, wear any old pair of Rebocks and ignore the HM.

God forbid we had similar qualifications and interviewed about the same, but assuming this to be the case, who would get the job?

If someone has on black shoes it blends in with their dark suit

It is pretty easy to tell if black shoes are scuffed or polished...

Your views and opinions on many aspects of interviewing and procedures would change drastically if you were ever to be in a position where you were responsible for hiring.
