we found a jeep for 350 from alamo....but people here have said that you show up and they don't have it when you get there....so we don't know.....
but anyway, 1850-350=1500 for the hotel and taxes and fees.....that's about 187 a night for a partial ocen view.
when we called the hotel, they said it'll be 1650 without any food credits for a Garden view.
we haven't found anything decent on VBRO either....we're not keen on staying at sheraton.....but given that this is a special trip for us and probably won't happen for another decade or so (we're on the east coast), we wanted to not be too stingy on the hotel or the lux.
our budget for car, hotel, taxes is about 2k.
Stay in sheraton for 7 nights instead of 8 nights. SAVE 300. (sheraton package is 1830 instead of 2130) it includes partial ocean view, car, taxes, $50 a day credit.
Then, we stay in oahu (wakiki beach) for 2 nights instead of 1 night. and then go home. The oahu hotel is "Outrigger Reef on the Beach" for 350 for 2 nights (includes taxes and transfer from and to airport).
Since the airport transfer is included (although it's going to be in a shared shuttle so it could mean lots of folks dropped off/picked up before/after you) it's an okay price -- a one-way taxi most times of day from HNL to mid-Waikiki will run $40 or more.
We just got back from Kauai and stayed in Poipu at the Grand Hyatt. The Hyatt was incredible and Poipu is a very dry area to stay (minimal rain).
Staying in that area, you are very close to Spouting Horn.
You can do the Waimea canyon in half a day....drive up in the morning, be back by around 1-2ish.
Then, spend a full day and drive up to Princeville, stop at all the waterfalls, the queens bath, Hanalei, and the lighthouse. On the way back stop at Bubba's burgers for lunch!

great!
do you mind if i ask you a few questions? (you're the perfect candidate to answer these given that your a tourist and that you stayed in poipu! :-)
so, did you find it to be a drag to have to drop 1.5 hours to hanalei?
are most of the pretty stuff (waterfalls, nice beaches, etc) on the north side? if so, did you have to drive up everyday? or did you have plenty of things to do in the south? how many times did you go to the north? how many nights did you stay in poipu? did you see the beach that sheraton sits on? nice?
