Just wanted to say that "gay" as a pejorative is not some Kauai thing, it has taken over the whole world. It doesn't have much connection to being gay any more, it's like the word now has three distinct meanings. I know a couple gay 20 year olds who use the word pejoratively without batting an eye. It means "lame" which if you think about it was probably a very insulting use of the word lame/disabled when it first started being used as a pejorative. Language evolves. I agree it's not a good thing overall but it is unstoppable.

I didn't grow up here in Maui and am so glad I didn't. It might be a nice place to move to for adult people seeking an adventure, but in my opinion, NOT for kids. Living here produces such a myopic and distorted view of the world for young minds, not to mention the lacklustre education.

A lot of parents who move over here think only of themselves, not of their children. They fry themselves on the beach while their kids end up with inferiority complexes as a minority.

Vacation places do not always equal good place to live for families.

Sorry if I offend any person born and bred here. There are, I'm sure, a lot worse places to be growing up than Kauai.[/LEFT]

Excellent post and oh so true; the problem is that people don't and or refuse to hear the truth.

Someone has been spending too much time reading things on the internet.

I must have missed that story. I did hear about making drugs to look like candy to transport them easier but not giving them to kids.

Thought I'd Google the terms: lollipop drugs

Snopes reports that a story about people using lollipops as ways to 'get' kids as false: snopes.com: Drugs in Suckers

There was a story from Colorado, a report in July 2009 from a Board of Health about a kid who brought a lollipop to school, but apparently that child got it from their father!
Jade Thomas, Executive Director, Colorado Alliance for Drug Endangered Children, testified in support of the department proposal. She stated that clarification of the law will protect children by limiting growing operations, and encourage safe storage and access to the medical marijuana. She echoed the concern about the large indoor grow operations that present hazards to children that live in them (mold, pesticides and bacteria). She related a case in Westminster where a child took a THC lollipop to school and discovered that the father had shared his medical marijuana with his young children. She stated that by defining the roles and responsibilities and other clarifications, medical marijuana will be viewed and used as other appropriate medications.

There are also many references to a lollipop form of fentanyl, Actiq, marketed by Cephalon, and the dangers with putting such a powerful drug into a form that might be mistakenly used by a child.
Actiq Lollipop Deaths

I wonder if the old urban myth has combined with the more recent issues with valid forms of lollipop drugs, and now we have the situation where some can think it's a widespread problem.
