Hello everyone!
I may be moving to the Knoxville/Oak Ridge area very soon due to a possible job transfer. I am trying to narrow down the areas we should be looking at. We are an African-American family with two very young children. I am looking for an area with some ethnic diversity and is pretty good for families with young children. I would also like an area that has a few cultural activities for the family to do. I've heard that Fountain City is great place to raise a family. Would you find that to be true? I am into somewhat natural or "green" living and I am trying to find a place were I can easily find at least a few people like myself. Do you know of any other recommended areas? Also, can someone give me a few names of realtors who deal with rental homes. I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

In that case, I wouldn't recommend Fountain City just because of the long commute.

You might want to check out Oak Ridge itself. People from all over the world live in and visit Oak Ridge, its schools are excellent, and there's a lot to do.

Oak Ridge is a little lacking in shopping but it's only 20 or so minutes from West Knoxville.

I'm not really sure, but I though that I read somewhere there is a lot drug related crime in the oak ridge area? Is that true? Also, would I be able to find a nice rental home out there for a decent price?

Nutraveler,
There are plenty of "nice" homes around O.R. But what do you consider "decent priced"? I can't answer the drug question as I live in East Knoxville. East Knoxville wouldn't work commute wise, it would be almost as bad as the commute from Fountain City.
There are plenty of real estate sites online, google rental homes Oak Ridge, Tn. and check out what comes up.
Good luck in your search,
Pam

I think Oak Ridge is your best choice as there are plenty of very educated people who will be interested in green technology. Plus great schools for your kids.

Congrats on your move, and once you check out the areas, like jmt says, lots of great neigborhoods to select from in and around Oak Ridge. You will see that several folks commute and anywhere around the Pellissippi connector, will put you in a short drive, some 20 minutes to Oak Ridge. The new Hardin Valley area, has all the styles and prices you want, from the low 200's, and up to the Million dollar range.
