Trust me, it was, and I was well aware of it. I should taken a picture of the schedule with a cell phone, if anything.

2. Even though he was late, and his schedule is his business, to be denied benefits, the casino will have to have good cause for letting him go (multiple instances of his wrong doing. Not just one). Unemployment seems to be getting fairly strict with employers about this. With so many people without jobs, as an employer, you'd better have a good reason for letting someone go.

Just stay calm, don't lie or embellish, and just state your case. You were indeed late, but only one time. Perfect record other than that. Then the casino will have to prove otherwise (and if you're honest, they won't be able to).
Thank you for giving me some hope.

On your first point, that would be the case if I had not indicated in the initial claim that my reason for leaving was "in dispute" and needed further investigation.

I *could* have just clicked on "laid off" and I think what you describe above is what would have happened. But that would not have been honest, at all.

I was 100% honest through the whole thing.

So, what happened was is they interviewed me and then called my employer. I'm not sure WHAT say the employer would have at that point. I actually saw on the desk of the HR person what she was going to send to UI, and it included a written statement I had provided. She even corrected something on the paperwork that said "discharged" and changed it to "no call, no show", which she said would be better and more accurate for my cause.

On your second point, it DOES seem ridiculous to let someone go over one incident. It just adds to the glut of joblessness.

How is "no call, no show" better than discharged for the employee? I would think the discharged would lean the liability towards the employer and the NC, NS would lean the blame toward the employee.

I can't claim to be an expert but do show up for the hearing and defend yourself to the best of your ability. Like someone else said, there's a good chance your employer won't show up.

This whole scheduling thing has always worried me. A couple times I was accused of NCNS..... but lucky me, I always had a printed copy of my schedule and I could prove they changed it without notifying me. Why do employers get away with that here? Once you post the schedule, it has to be the employers responsibility to notify you if there is a change. That's just common sense. After all, they are supposed to want you to show up!

It's wrong for them to be able to fire you for that but I'm sure it's done all the time. People deserve what they get for willful misconduct. But sooner or later, even the best employee will make a mistake. Employers make mistakes too. There needs to be more give and take.

Good luck!

I know with our company a no call no show is termination. At $11 per hour to start, you'd figure employees would be more responsible

If I worked there i would call my supervisor or boss every day just to make sure that I am not on the schedule or I am on the schedule! They would probably fire me because I would be annoying

to the OP, I would just move on and get something else. This might be a good thing for you, since it will open doors to other jobs that you might even like better.

I have made a crappy wage just under that until I was laid off, but I have to disagree with your general premise. $11 an hour is chicken feed, and the people that are willing to work for it generally are not responsible, and that includes yours truly.

Try to find work in another sector besides casinos. Most of them are known for treating employees like dirt and they're run by dictators.
I know this town is chock-full of casinos, one-industry kind of place but Vegas is big enough now so people can find work in other fields. It's not as varied as i would like it to be but other kinds of jobs are out there.
Maybe go to a trade school or take a course at UNLV to learn another line of work. I understand the health care industry needs all the help it can get.

^This

I think you will find that if you a profession that requires a college degree, you will have more opportunities to work in an environment that is not so capricious. My son has had a number of low skill jobs before he realized that a college degree is really the way to go. I, myself, worked several jobs that were low skill before I realized that I could have better stability if I went to college and got degree.

If you like math and/or science and choose a profession heavy in those subjects, you will have a job for life in many cases.

View this as an opportunity.

Too bad - do not expect to be backed up by anyone in the end - they have jobs to protect as well. This is a Right To Work state. They can fire anyone for any reason.
