Do any of you remember the COPA room in The Sands Hotel? Remember when TV meant channel 2 or 8? The Silver Queen Bar? Phone numbers that started with DU? Was it fun for you?

Well, I sure remember the Copa Room and the big names you could see there for the price of a drink. And TV meant Ch-2, Ch-8, & Ch-13. Red Mcllvaine and I did the promotion when "The number one station, Ch-2, became Ch-3". BTW: Red's been gone for 19 years, but you can still Google his name and get links.

Ch-13 was in a horse stable on the grounds of the old El Rancho, and Ch-2/Ch-3 was at DI and Boulder Highway. Ch-8 was just about where it is now.

I think I remember a Silver Queen Bar but can't place where it was. The phones had only numbers when I got here in '64, but Henderson was a long distance call and had their own phone company. Henderson smelled like rotten eggs.

Do you remember the Aku Aku in the Stardust. Still the best restaurant ever in Las Vegas, and the best Polynesian drinks.

When Ch-2/3 was on Boulder Highway, the transmitter was in the hallway between the control room and the studio, and the antenna was out back. It was 550 feet tall, which put it about level with the Strip. So if you lived in Charleston Heights you'd have a hard time receiving our signal with the top of the transmitter actually lower than the homes up there. Ch-2 was originally licensed to Cow Springs, NV.

My mom was a waitress in LV back in the 50s and she has told me many a story about the place. And you are right, channel 13 was there but as mom recalls it was not network affiliated back then in the late 50s

I will look around. Pics were expensive back then with cameras and film but I know my mom probably has some. When we were little kids we spent lots of time in LV. My dad was an attorney and, while we lived in LA, he had lots of clients in Vegas and it was almost a second home at times. It is where he and my mom met and, although they would never fess up, I believed it is where I was conceived as well.
