Indeed, I was.

I was also subtly asking you to realize that all of these other markets have been a blow to Las Vegas: Indian gaming, Macau, Singapore, etc.

Not to mention the electronic gaming. I think if the casinos are coming back they might pander to the resort side more. (Don't quote me on this. I have no idea what's going on.) I heard they comp people for other things besides gambling these days.

From what I have read the projection for the next 10 years for LV is not much for new casinos building instead the present casinos will be putting millions in upgrades and more features for visitors. They have to compete for the foreign visitor which makes up about 3% of the visitors to LV but they have a much more $$$ impact. Example is this month Chinese News year last year LV took in 3 Billion during this holiday the big whales from China fly in to drop some big money. So the Casinos here must be modernized to be an attractive vacation site

btw, If Adelson succeeds in building "Euro Vegas", the European market will be one less for the real Las Vegas to draw from. Think about that. And, not only that, "Euro Vegas" would also siphon the Middle Eastern market from Las Vegas too, due to its geographic proximity to Europe.

The Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Australians now have Macau and Singapore. Three quarters of Americans now live within a days drive or less of an Indian casino or river boat and, soon, Europeans and Middle Easterners will have "Euro Vegas" in Spain.

"Sin City" cloned itself and flung itself all across the globe.

This is why the real Las Vegas is under the burden of constantly having to re-invent itself to remain attractive.

I, for one, would rather go downtown anyway.. After living in the NorthEast and working at Foxwoods, the strip casinos seem kind of pathetic. We have 440 table games and the 2 casionos within 20 minutes are monstrous, albeit far too large for the area nowadays. I like the character of the downtown casinos... While I absolutely appreciate the monetary benefits the strip brings, I'll leave that for the tourists

There is not going to be much building as long as you can score an under $50 room on or round the Strip. I am almost shocked at some of the rates that I see in my e-mail daily.

The world's eighth-largest economy (California) likes to drive here and blow their money on the weekends. Between that and conventions, the casino business will continue to chug along.

Do I think we should diversify? Hell yes. But This gloom and doom has been going on since Atlantic City and still hasn't materialized in the "death of Las Vegas as we know it."

Yes and no. Vegas boomed well after gaming was readily available in other parts of the country. Having several casinos withing 2-2.5 hours driving from NYC, I still go out to Vegas. If anything the increased availability of local gaming increased it's acceptance, and made Vegas an even more acceptable vacation destination.

The far east casino may skim off the asian whale business, just by convenience, or it may have the same effect as above. Only the casinos know the actual numbers on this. You might be able to see it in the Baccarat results.

havin lived in LV for MOST of the last 50 years and ALSO livedin AC at the onset of Casino Gaming there....I am a firm believer that the BEST thing to have happened to LV was AC.

It exposed a gigantic number of people to Casino Gaming that had NEVER experienced it and made them want to come to LV to see how it was REALLY done.
