Hi Beth,

Recommending a doctor depends on a lot of things. First, what kind of doctor? Primary Care, OB-Gyn, Internal medicine or other specialty? Second, there's the matter of insurance, do you have it? do they offer a list of doctors or is it an HMO? Third, what part of town do you live in or are you willing to drive across the valley to visit a recommended doctor?

If you are new to the area, don't have insurance and are just looking for some preventative maintenance, I would recommend visiting one of the UMC quick cares around town.

I know a few doctors in town, let me know the answers to the questions above and I might be able to help you.

I don't understand your statement. I shopped there all the time and they had terrific bargains in the home-goods stores, clothing stores, and shoe stores. I bought all of my shoes there for incredible bargains, including my favorite pair of Italian designer leather sandals for $40. Perhaps if you're looking for a Versace dress you might expect to pay more... But I bought normal things, never faced a bomb threat in a store grocery shopping, and don't have such drama to report for five years of living in Vegas. It's a normal place in most ways and the Primm outlets offered better buys in my opinion than the Belz Factory so-called "outlet" mall on South Las Vegas Blvd. which actually caters mostly to the tourists from the Strip being very close to Mandalay Bay. There are always people looking for drama to report and I guess if they search enough for it and it's their expectation, they'll find it sooner or later.

When did you shop there last? The Belz Factory mall was sold over 3 years ago. It's a Premium Outlet Mall now.

They only have five "home-goods" stores at Primm. Which one did you find the bargains in?

To this day I still call them the Belz Factory mall! That's how I always knew it and when the changed the name we still called it Belz.

Primm is filled with mostly clothing stores, I don't care for that outlet center.

Vegas is a nice place to visit...once or twice... but not to live...
I went to Primm, too, for a free tour, and it is pretty run down. Didn't even dare to eat the food there. Been to Vegas three times, so far. Thought of living there, to get away from the cold weather in New England, but Vegas is just a get away. I also heard the suicide rate down the is the highest of all the states. For anyone who is considering to move down there, like I had done, watch the show Cops (the one that's is vegas, of course,) You will change your mind. Unless you want to buy a casino a make millions, LOL!

People either love or hate Las Vegas. I love it.

It's not perfect. RE prices are out of sight thanks to California. You will pay a high percentage of your income for housing. Jobs are plentiful but some don't pay as well. Schools aren't world class. I honestly wouldn't say Vegas is the best place I could think of to raise a family. But most true metropolitan areas aren't that great for kids either! Vegas has a large transient population. People are always coming or going.

The weather is divine. It's too hot for 2 months in the summer. It's dry and seldom gloomy. Usually no ice, snow, or fog. There is always something to do. Food is cheap and you don't have to cook unless you want to. There are lots of outdoor things to do too. You can go hiking, skiing, and swimming all in the same day if you want. There is a real international airport and it's easy to get anywhere.

Vegas isn't for everyone. Try it! You can always go elsewhere if you don't like it.

I agree with everything you said and I can't think of one aspect of Las Vegas you've noted that isn't absolutely accurate. I'm so tired of people bashing the city and using examples from 15 years ago of a tired supermarket incident to judge a whole place. It is true though, it's a love/hate thing for Vegas - and the summer temperatures in July and August clearly send some people packing as it's extreme and not for everyone I agree, and housing prices went through the roof no doubt, but a lot of the negative posters seem to have that general characteristic of focusing on what's negative no matter where they are I think and derive personal pleasure from painting as black a picture as possible...

I lived in Las Vegas a couple of times. Once as a child and once as an adult.

One of the problems of living there is that there is 24-hour gambling, drinking and whatever else. This isn't a problem for some people, but for others, it's a huge problem. My mom would leave me home alone a lot because she liked to gamble. My best friend's parents were never around because -- well, I don't remember why but I can't ever remember meeting them.

I think there were a lot of absentee parents in Las Vegas.

People never like to admit to addictions but Las Vegas caters to addictions. It's a 24-hour city with legal gambling, legal drinking, and legal almost everything else. You may totally trust your kids, but when you send them to their friends house for a sleepover, are the other parents around? Or are they hanging out at some casino?

If I had stayed in Vegas when I was a child, I probably would have ended up a juvenile delinquent. We were already making out with our 5th grade boyfriends in the bathrooms and skipping school by escaping over the kindergartener's wall. Did anyone care? Not really. With the emphasis on "pretty adult women prostitutes" our idea of beautiful girls was high heels and a lot of makeup. You can claim you are going to protect your children from this -- but how can you, really? There are free magazines everywhere and billboards and everything else. There is no way to protect kids from growing up way too fast. There are slot machines at gas stations and 7/11s throughout Nevada. Booze is free for players at most casinos in Nevada.

Anyway, I think any parent should think twice before moving to Las Vegas. I've read nothing/seen nothing that has shown me the culture for kids has changed over the years. It's still a place to grow up fast.

I will again simply note that the nice suburban communities of Las Vegas interchange with those elsewhere in the South West.

Personalities addictied to gambling or tending that way should clearly avoid Las Vegas. If you can't keep it well controlled elsewhere you will be done for here.

My children grew up in upstate NY and suburban Los Angeles. They knew all about bars and drinking and sex and pot well before they attended high school. Adding Video Poker does not change this at all. In fact I think the attraction of gambling to teenagers is reasonably limited.

The strip is raunchy in places. But people here don't go to the strip except to work or an occassional holiday. Kids go even less as the strip has limited charm to children and teenagers.

Even the 23 year old across the street seldom goes to the strip. It is too expensive and not very interesting. I will however note that he knows a good bit about the local bars even including which ones have good food.

So not to worry...your teens will find the same booze, sex, and drugs they would anywhere else in the good old USA. But practically no more than in Milwaukee or Chicago or Rochester or wherever.

Good points. Just because one poster clearly had a dysfunctional family and tends to view the world as dark and cruel, not to mention having been in the fast lane herself trying to emulate the look of hookers in Las Vegas when she was young in the 1950's with no parental supervision, doesn't mean other families are like that or would allow it. Few would. And you're right, problems exist everywhere, no more so in Las Vegas than anywhere else. I hope the original poster can see that the negative posts are written by someone who just seems sour on life and assigns blame undeservedly, but that's her unresolved issue, not ours. Las Vegas has some wonderful neighborhoods and also areas that are best avoided, but all the posters have pretty much outlined those areas good and bad and seem to be in general agreement.
