I lived in Las Vegas (Henderson actually) for a little over a year, and just moved back to the east coast (Jersey to be exact). I couldn't WAIT to get out of Vegas, but now that I have been gone a couple of months, I miss it, but don't think I would move back.

Pro's - with the housing market bust, especially Vegas, it was an incredible opportunity for a renter. I got a 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with a two car garage, built in 2007 for a steal. This was the 2nd house we had to move into in the first 6 months we were there, but more on that later......

Scenery is amazing. Always something to do, even outside the strip. It is a 24/7 lifestyle there so you can always find a store open. Especially WalMart. You can't drive down a street without hitting like 3 Walmarts. Great prices on the Casino buffet's. Especially if you are local. If you are local, you get great discounts pretty much everywhere you go. Especially food, shows, entertainment etc...... Weather. Yes, it get's hot. However, try coming back to the east coast in 97 degree weather with the humidity. I would take 110 dry heat in Vegas any day. PLUS the air conditioning in Vegas is incredible. From the casinos to the houses. The houses are built to withstand the high heat, so they are well insulated. Especially the newer ones. Plus no snow, and didn't have to deal with the raging snow storms the east coast had this year.

Con's - As I said in my pro's, we had to move out of one of the house's we moved into within the 6 months we got there. Since the market went bust and people are having their homes foreclosed on, they will sometimes rent the homes, not pay their mortgages, and collect the rent. Then when the house goes into foreclosure, the bank kicks the tennant's out. This scam runs rampant in Vegas, especially since so many houses were bought by people as investments, not a home they lived in.

Crime - Can't tell you how many weirdo people came up to me right in the casino and asked me for money.

Driving - half the cars don't have license plates, because the drivers are not legal to drive in that state. So they can't get a license or a car registered.

Schools. I am currently prego now, never had kids, but heard the school districts stink.

Jobs - Vegas currently has 13.5 % unemployment rate. One of the highest in the country. the job market there is bad.

However, the good the bad the ugly, whatever it may be. It is Vegas. I took my first vacation with my now husband there, got married there, and conceived my child there. Some people say "we will always have Paris" but I say "we will always have Vegas" :-)

I read alot of negativity down here, to be quiet honoust i stopped readin after page 2.
Not so much that im convinced now vegas is a rotten place to live,
more the fact that ppl mostly tend to see the negative. Like on the apt rating sites as well.
Its good ppl post their personal experiences, but its their own oppinion. Other ppl might see it differently.
Havin said that, no doubt vegas has his downsides, but dont u get that everywhere??
Growin up in Holland, in a touristic town as well, ive turned out pretty well i think.
The town i grew up in isnt as big as vegas, but the general idea is the same.
Down here the legal drinkin age is 16, theres the so called coffeeshops where u can legaly buy weed, theres casinos and slotmachines, legal prostetution, drugs, lots of drinkin and fightin cuz of that.
And sure, i done all of that, and propably at a way to early age too, but its not cuz of my enviroment.
We did that cuz, like any other youngster, we were curious and wanted to try it.
As far as bad parentin, my mom was pretty lose with me, but also tought me wrong from right.
The fact that i got into trouble wasnt her fault, parents cant always check their kids.
But lookin back on it , i learned from it, and became a better person from it.
So sayin vegas isnt a place to raise kids is alil bit harsh, its more the parents.
And if they cant control their addictions, thats their fault... Theyll have the same probs anywhere else too then.

I live in Northern Nevada and know the casino cities well, both Reno and Las Vegas.

There are several persons I know who lived in Las Vegas and had a huge problem with the free or low cost meals and buffets. If you gamble you can practically eat for free and of course the buffets are the most food for the money. This can get a person in big trouble real fast. It is delightful to eat out often in a 24/7 town when you can eat for less than buying food and cooking.

You may say "not me, never" but it is easy to acquire a "food problem" and overeatting can cause serious weight gain and health issues. Look around Vegas and you will see many overweight locals. The ones I know have moved away and got "stomach bypass surgery". Now it scares me to death to eat in Las Vegas. Just something to keep in mind if you like food and have little control.
