Personally, I'd rather LA & the Bay stay in California. I find these people quite difficult to get along with because they always seem bitter about being here. It seems like a lot of Cali expats feel they have been displaced to NV due to rising costs, not that they actually want to live here.
Most of my new neighbors are from Cali and the only thing they complain about is the heat during summer. Otherwise, they are giddy about the lower cost of living, less traffic, and low taxes compared to Cali.

Don't know if it's the difference between Northern and Southern Nevada, but I've talked to a lot of CA expats here and NOBODY I've talked to regrets moving here.

Me personally? Could use better restaurants and more fresh fish, but that's about it!!! That being said, if I had to move back to CA, it wouldn't kill me.

I have a bunch of friends who are former Cali residents living in both southern and northern Nevada and they all love it. I don't even think I have heard too many complaints about the heat but more just the obligatory "ya, it's hot in the summer...." A couple people miss family in California but that's easy to remedy. A long weekend with family and then you are reminded why you moved 500 miles away from them! Lol.

None of this is true, but always can count on people in this forum to exaggerate things when it comes to talking about the other places they came from.

It usually takes them about a year.... at least the ones who tend to move into my part of town, who are typically from LA, but a couple from SF.

FWIW my section of town veers younger. I think City-Data says median age is 38.

I grew up in SoCal and have been in the Vegas valley for awhile now. Every time I go back to visit LA the traffic horrifies me (except now- its eerily empty but that will change soon enough).

The cost of living comparison isn't even debatable- Almost all of Los Angeles is off-the-chain high, quite reasonable here for comparable housing. I don't think one could buy a run-down condo for $300K in a poor part of SoCal, here, quite a different story.

The weather is pretty awesome here for the most part, winds and the occasional storm non-withstanding, and as far as the heat: Hey- it's the MOJAVE-what do you expect?? Helps to have good A/C!

That's because they didn't move here by choice. They were forced out. They didn't get the education necessary for the jobs that would allow them to afford to live there.

The few that come here by choice do so for selfish financial reasons (no mortgage, no income tax, etc.). No one enjoys 100+ in the summer instead of California beach weather.

I agree with you. I will say, I think the 100+ weather here is better than the 100+ weather we used to get back in DC with 99% humidity!

Financial reasons were a big part of my leaving the DC area - taxes were starting to get pretty ridiculous. However, I don't feel I was forced out, I just wasn't feeling it anymore.

I'm not sure what weather is like on Cali beaches but I have heard the water is COLD. I guess I don't see what the big deal is, though. Even if I lived near the beach I wouldn't go there every day. I have an in-ground pool, but I don't swim in it every day. Its a pretty quick flight to LA or SF or a few hours drive if I really want to go to the beach. I've swam in Lake Mead a few times and I found it quite nice.

I think you're right that these people really don't want to leave California in the first place. I've been to SoCal several times and I don't see what's so great about it. It seems like its mostly city and suburbia just like the rest of the US. You can find strip malls, chain stores, and tract housing pretty much anywhere.

Sometimes I think the current Cali residents really have to convince themselves that they love California to justify their efforts in their own minds. The Cali-expats I think look back on things with Rose-tinted glasses and conveniently forget about the ridiculous taxes, prices, overcrowding, traffic, homeless drug addicts, etc.

Housing is sky high, maybe that has helped the crime problem. Looks like they made it to April, before someone was murdered (in front of Lucky). 16 inches of rain..no snow...often looks like a desert. I remembered it as being hotter, but their climate looks good on paper. I left the East Bay in 1995, and it was considered one of the lower class areas, maybe a little bit better than Hayward, but not nearly as bad as Richmond. There were some nice homes in the hills in all. Sites high cost of living and crowding as the cons. And what is the nickname for I880?
