Took a break from cooking this morning. Went to pick up breakfast from the neighborhood Robertos for the first time on Centennial.

Probably the nicest Robertos I ever been in.

I didn't know that there are over 40 of these places in the valley...

Authentic and tasty. I don't know a vegetarian would fare though. You'd be better off at a Mediterranean place.

The Roberto's on Simmons / Aliante Pkwy looks similar to the pics posted.

Yes very tasty. The proof is the 40+ locations. I am used to the not so nice(but decent) joints around the base

Food is always the same.

Mexican is one of the easiest things to eat as a veggie. I can usually get anything made with beans. I eat Mexican food a lot

Are you making it at home?

You might want to check to see if the beans are made with bacon fat when eating out.
That's what makes them taste so good. A clerk at a fast food joint might not get this distinction.

I know there is always a chance they use lard in the refried beans. I'm not THAT picky as a vegetarian that I worry too much about that. I do know which places near me use it or not, and if they don't know I can usually tell after I have eaten it. Beans made without animal fat taste better, IMO, but I am not used to grease like that. Also, many Mexican places have just pinto beans or black beans, generally not cooked in animal fat.

There's a place over on the west side called Donna Maria Tamales that makes some great cheese enchiladas. Their beans and rice aren't bad either. You'd probably like Baja Fresh too. No lard there.

Do you have Baja Fresh in Iowa?

I still don't think Roberto's would be a good choice for a vegetarian. They specialize in tasty grease and lots of it. It's not Tex-Mex (which I love) or the bright Mexican flavors of a Rick Bayliss joint. It's good old fashioned south of the border peasant food. (Dangit, now I'm hungry) Good thing there's a Roberto's up the street.

No Baja Fresh here. We ate at one when I was there last Sept. I thought it was "eh".

It's a chain, so definitely meh. That said, their Chipotle mango chicken salad dressing is delicious. You could get it with beans instead.

Oddly, my favorite Mexican restaurant is in Chicago Salpicon - Chicago's Best Mexican Restaurant
