Possibly more people living in NEWARK work in New York City than in Newark.
The six county area is called the Newark-Union, NJ-PA Metropolitan Division, but Newark is shorthand since it is the largest city.
  1. Essex County, NJ
  2. Hunterdon County, NJ
  3. Morris County, NJ
  4. Sussex County, NJ
  5. Union County, NJ
  6. Pike County, PA

But for this forum, let's stick to Lehigh Valley talk, okay?

Well, the annexation of Pike County, PA into NYC's CSA, along with the potential for Monroe County, PA to be added and the possibility of Warren County, NJ to revert back to the NYC CSA in 2013 are all very relevant as to how Lehigh and Northampton Counties will be classified in the future, especially since the NYC CSA will then border the Lehigh Valley. If Warren County, NJ; Pike County, PA; and Monroe County, PA are all going to officially be part of NYC's larger metropolitan area, then that literally does put the Lehigh Valley into a "squeeze play" between NYC and Philadelphia.

Here's an interesting bit of related news.
A couple of days ago I was on the phone with my car insurance company.
I have a good driving record but my insurance went up since I moved here from Lancaster last year.
I asked the customer service rep why my insurance was 10.00 a month higher
In Allentown than Lancaster.
She told me it was due to me moving into what they consider the New York City statistical area so they charge more because of it.

I asked her why not Philadelphia instead of NYC she replied that the Bucks county line was the cut off for the NYC statistical area charts that they use.

I use Progressive.

Interesting related info for this thread.

For the year 2000, the New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area had a population of 21,361,797 (includes Pike County PA)

If they add the following two counties that is an additional 270K people
169,842 Monroe County 2010 (617 sq mi including water) 279/sq mi
108,692 Warren County 2010 (363 sq mi including water) 303/sq mi

That's a fairly small alteration because of a definition change (about 1%). The census bureau is probably reluctant to make a very big definition change, because it muddies the changes due to immigration (international and domestic), and birth and death rates.

The 32-mile-long, section of Interstate 78 along with the 1,222' Interstate 78 Toll Bridge opened to traffic on November 21, 1989. So that was insufficient to change the status in 1990 or 2000 census. The only real transportation change since the last census was the completion of route 33 from route 22 to Interstate 78. I doubt that is enough to tip the scale to a redefinition.

While the ABE metropolitan statistical area may be changed in the long term, personally, I think the only thing that may change this year will that Monroe county will no longer be classed as rural ,and Warren County may be taken away from ABE and given back to Newark, Northern NJ.

Monroe county is almost the same density as Warren County, and considerably higher than Pike county. It seems that classifying it as rural is dated.

I moved from NY to Philly a few years back, and that is certainly the case. Housing prices in Philly were 2X as cheap as Manhattan (the nicer parts) and 1.5X Brooklyn (again, the nicer parts). Some of the nicer buildings near Rittenhouse compare to Brooklyn's prices, but that's the really high end of the Philly market.
