My wife and I are going to move to Kentucky from California for our retirement next year and want to know which communities (towns) around Lexington would be the best areas to move. We are looking to spend up to 250k on a house, but are also looking at possibly buying land on which to build a house. We would like someplace with normal utilities available and within a reasonable driving distance of a hospital. We are also looking for newer housing areas. Thanks for the assistance.

If you're looking in Lexington and want newer housing, take a look at the Hamburg area. Lots of shopping and other amenities there. What do you mean by "normal utilities?" Saint Joseph East Hospital is about a 5-10 min. drive away.

How around Lexington are you wanting to look at? There are several nice communities near Lexington which might meet your wants.

By normal utilities is that we want to be within range of city utilities, we do not want to use a well or septic tank. About the range, our main concern is to live within 15 minutes or so of a hospital. We both have medical concerns we worry aobut. We don't mind the size of the city, we have lived in both small (2500 pop.) and very large (Sacramento, CA).

You shouldn't need a septic tank or well access anywhere in the city... at least that I know of. Honestly you can live pretty much anywhere in the city and be 15 minutes from a hospital. For the sake of having amenities nearby, I'd still recommend the Hamburg area. I also will recommend Beaumont (Harrodsburg Road just outside of New Circle Road) as it is close to both Saint Joseph Hospital and Central Baptist Hospital (2 of the best hospitals in the state).

I would suggest Danville, Frankfort or Georgetown.

Normally Danville would be a nice suggestion, but they OP wanted to be closer to a good hospital and frankly I would steer clear of Ephraim in Danville. Georgetown really doesn't have a good hospital, and Frankfurt is both 30-45 mins. from both Louisville and Lexington.

If you're looking outside of Lexington, I would say Georgetown, Richmond or Danville. You'll get a larger house and more land outside of Lexington for sure.

It all depends on how much land you want. If you want a typical friendly community, I would either recommend Hamburg (along with teebird) - zip 40509 or the area called Wyndham [Downs?] in zip 40514. Honestly, I think Beaumont (40513) and Rabbit Run (40503/40514) are going to be just slightly out of the 250K pricemark (not necessarily much). Copper Run (40514) would get you a nice house in a lovely established community. Now, if you want a lot of land, none of these neighborhoods would be to your liking. All of these above are within close access to hospitals.
