Currently I home school but I want to find out about certain districts (depending where we move). I'm looking in the radius around Ronkonkoma (north, south, east and west) to be close to where my dh works.
My son is high level functioning AS. I would prefer a 'smaller' school (not ones with hundreds of kids). He's in 7th now but I am probably thinking more for next year or 9th grade.
If you know specifically about Special Ed. in Holbrook/Smithtown/East Islip or Hauppauge (or recommend a district) let me know.
Rocky Point is a solid, caring, smaller district with excellent SE, a very active SEPTA as well as Board members who's kids have special needs. Its one of the best aspects of the district along with Pre-Full Time K and excellent Music,Sports and Academic programs.
The district covers parts of Miller Place, most of Sound Beach and all of Rocky Point.
(All are not too far from Ronkonkoma)
You might want to wait to decide. If I understand it correctly the governor's proposed 2% tax cap could lead to devastating cuts in Special Ed. While Special ed is mandated it can take many forms so I would try to wait to see what happens in a district before you move your family.
Some districts might not change their Special ed approach but other districts might be financially handcuffed into cutting back.

Agreed.
Culturally I can say RP has made SE (and lately AP under Dr Ring)a priority and a draw point for the district however this is a sad reality for all districts in the short term.I have not heard this to be the case here as yet. Like i said theres a well armed SEPTA that definitely had the Admin/Boards ear.I would look for that in any district you are considering.Caring is key on many levels.Nonetheless, I do think looking at smaller districts is a good move.
I would give a call to the Dist and each out to the SEPTA/SERC.
Rocky Point SEPTA (http://www.rpalumni.org/pta/septa.htm - broken link)
You could also rent until you were comfortable with the direction.
I concur...Rocky Point is the Eden of Long Island's educational system. In fact, its just paradise.....and it's good that we are reminded of that over and over and over and over.
Ive head good things about the SE there and Commack too.
Elwood SD has a good program as well.
For "older" kids, Huntington has excellent options too.
