Hi, I live in a Levittown apt in Nassau County. I've been looking for a home in Suffolk county. I like a bunch of homes in the North Shirley/East Yaphank area. The price is right and from what I can see the area looks pretty nice. I'm a single guy with no kids as of yet. This home is just for me right now but would like to stay in the home if I marry and have children. I wonder if it's a good place for my "future" kids and a relatively crime free zone. I'm an audio equipment, musician kind of guy with a lot of expensive sound recording equipment, and 2 nice cars. I don't want to worry every time I leave my house to come back a find everything gone or vandalized. I don't need the hassle, I don't think anybody does.
I grew up in Elmont near Queens in Nassau County. The neighborhood was absolutely crime free at one time. Within 5 years the neighborhood completely changed along with Cambria Heights Queens which neighbors Elmont. Within the span of 2 1/2 years we had our garage broken into 3 separate times, 5 bikes stolen from the property, 3 cars stolen from our driveway, T-Tops stolen off a Trans-Am, car broken into and radio stolen, house broken into once, and mom was mugged walking down a street that she's walked down for 25 years with no problem.
I moved to Levittown 16 years ago and I can honestly say I can literally leave my door wide open and not have to worry about any criminal activity. I’ve never had anything stolen or broken into for 16 years. Wish I could afford to buy here but prices & taxes are out of my reach right now. Someone honestly please give me some insight about the North Shirley East Yaphank area. I don't want to make a 350K mistake. Very much appreciated, thanks much, VL
I think east yapank is ok, but if you're really spending 350k, you have lots of other choices that may be safer long term. I don't think you'd have problems with being robbed & people say the entire area is on its way up, so as long as you practice some basic home security you should be fine!
I've said it before and i'll say it again, when it comes to a great deal on Long Island Rocky Point takes the cake. There are many great homes on the market in your price range and our community offers a wonderfull quality of life for first time homebuyers. Not to insult residents of Shirley, but overall the crime in Rocky Point is nearly non existent compared to the somewhat high crime rate in the Shirley/Mastic area. You will also find that our town is full of friendly, upstanding people and you will surely get to know your neighbors. Good luck with your home search and i hope you take my advice into consideration.
I just purchased a house in north shirley/east yaphank area
we looked at over 150 houses & when I say I got to know the area,
I got to know the area.
it is a great area, for over 300K you can & will find a great home
we paid 300 & we got a real nice home.
I won't say the people of rocky point aren't nice, I'm sure they are.
we looked there & we didn't like all the hills, the skinny streets, lack of street parking & the houses being on top of one another
The reason we looked where we did,was because for what we had to spend
all we could find in other areas were handy man's specials
Look good in North Shirley, East Yaphank,Mastic-(South Manor school district) you will find something you like.
If we had even $25,000 more to spend, we could have bought a mint house that needed nothing
They are out there.

he had all the patience in the world with us
showing us houses week after week after week.
other agents wanted to show us 3 houses & buy
we were very choosy & not once did he object, try to talk us into a house we were unsure of, always did what we asked
He always was available when it was convienant for us to look, etc.
My boss is from Rocky Point. What a jackass. Wouldn't want him as a neighbor.
