To me hempstead has a lot of potential and with the right leadership could really be jewel of long island. It is really a shame to see it in its current condition.

The leadership of Hempstead Village needs to get its act together and focus on closing down illegal rentals, such as flophouses/illegal boarding houses. This makes it harder for illegal aliens and gangbangers (who have taken a leading edge in ruining modern Hempstead) to find anywhere to live and will reduce their population. They also need to get a handle on school and village taxes, because they are too high for what you get, and, besides the crime problems, are a deterrent to decent people moving to Hempstead. For what it's worth, there are still some nice, peaceful neighborhoods in Hempstead and it would be great to see them grow.

If the residents don't give a damn why bother? A simple thing as calling the town to fix a pothole goes a long way. I hate to say it, but if you live somewhere and you don't make an effort to get involve and improve your community, things will not get better. It's like beating a dead horse!!!

THE BACKBONE OF A TOWN IS IT'S SCHOOL DISTRICT. If it's School District is under-performing than so is the town: period. So if the Village of Hempstead, the Parents of the students and the Students decide to fix the School District (it's a 3-way effort) than EVERYTHING ELSE will gradually improve. Until then, things will remain crappy.

School District fixed → Town becomes more desirable → Middle Class move back → Money back into once cash-poor area → More money for Local Government (in form of taxes) → Better services(including law enforcement) → Improved quality of life in town

No, not in our lifetime. You need at least two new generations to break the mold and clean it up.

Whether it's potholes or the schools, the people who live there need to care. Great towns are great because of the citizens who live there. Same with crap towns.

I really don't want to make up excuses for the people there who don't care but sometimes it is the landlord/slumlord who is at-fault for not up-keeping a property the way it should be and contributing to the community looking neglected. A tenant bears no obligation for the maintenance of the property, at least to the best of my knowledge. I'm sure a large percentage of the housing there are rentals owned by absentee-landlords.

you got it backwards. Get some actual productive members of society living in Hempstead and the schools/students will eventually take on the characteristics of its residents.

You could take the whole Jericho school district's administration, every teacher, and even every building....plop it down in Hempstead....and it wouldn't make any difference there.
