Yes, if they can't do it themselves, I will give them money for a downpayment. That's my plan and that's what I'm putting money aside for (in addition to college and my daughter's wedding). Geez, I just got a little sick right there.
I think it's not so bad... in 20 years Long island will be jam packed with aging baby boomers who are well into retirement and starting to pass on. There will be a glut of great jobs to be had and homes to buy. It'll be a reverse boom - housing values will drop and the young will move in once again.
It'll be just like Detroit but with nice beaches. Just kidding folks.

I do not know if anyone can truly answer that as only time will tell...But this will occur all over ... there is a lot in the news now about how baby boomers will even have hard times now due to loss of pensions and little peopel save on their own for retirement, the next generation they say will be worse if they do not fix the soc sec mess so I do not think one particular area will be more or less costly as there are so many other contributing factors
Personally I would not be worrying if my kids could make it here. Just can't worry about 20 years from now. If they still want to live here, if others can afford it, then they will find a way just like everyone I know who does it here.

Do you REALLY think your kids can swing a starter in GC on their own?
Now or in 20 years?

I bought my 1st house in 2000 for $500K...it was a 2 family townhouse, new.
