It's a non-issue. All the gang bangers I know speak perfect English.
The "they should learn the language" tripe is just a dumb politcal football. Based on sheer numbers, the latin communities have assimilated remarkably faster than almost all others. We don't notice in NY because we are more accustomed to Eastern Euro and Asian immigrants (many of whom barely even attempt to assimilate and just develop their own areas...someone can live their whole life in Brighton Beach or Chinatown speaking Russian and Chinese respectively).
Cowardly politicians looking for votes and scapegoats attack the language issue. Everyone else all over the world is learning English, except Americans who can barely fashion a sentence or understand we live ON and island, not IN one or their, there and they're all have independent uses.

But seriously, on the MS-13 episode in the title of this thread, all the gangbangers interviewed spoke perfect english.
I'm not discounting those factors entirely, but remove poverty from the equation and gangs go away, plain and simple.
Poverty has a smaller role in creating gang activity that I think you believe. But while were ridding the world of poverty and coming up with a magical cure for cancer, do you think supplying every Salvadoran, Mexican, Honduran a suitcase of money and a pony will help the situation? Come on man! Poverty is up there with death & taxes as certainties in the fiat-currency world we live in.
It's part of their culture. Salvadorans are actually safer here in NY than they are in their own country. Do you know that they arrest you indefinitely for being an MS-13 member (or even just a suspected MS13 member) in El Salvador?? What do we do here on LI? We have bleeding heart liberal judges and groups like the New York Civil Liberties Union that protect known gang members instead of squashing them like the virus they are.Judge dismisses Suffolk anti-gang measure
As long as humans are acquisitive by nature, destructive, bored, have low self-esteem, and drugs exist (please don't blame drug problems on poverty), you are sure to have gangs; Especially when certain cultures and nationalities have their youths growing up thinking it's a normal way of life. Dman made a good point earlier in the thread, and the only point that needs to be made regarding the poverty factor --- The majority of people living in poverty are NOT in gangs.

Gangs are a symptom of poverty and are endemic in many poor areas here and elsewhere. Not sure what you want the NCPD to do about it.
Not necessarily. I mean, at one point New Orleans had the highest murder rate of any city in the world, but it's far from the poorest city in the world.
My mother always said that thugs here don't know how good they have it. At least for the most part in the U.S. you have money for basic needs. At least if you're in a third-world country and you're robbed by a gang of street kids, you know they were desperate for money.
The median income is $27,793 and 38.3% of the population lives below the poverty level.
Now how come the first neighborhood manages to have a fairly low crime rate, while the second neighborhood has some of the highest crime rates in the city?
And nobody better bring up race as the determining factor.
I highly doubt there are gangbangers in Forest Hills, Queens.
Corona is adjacent to Forest Hills. There is some spillover. Whoever created the list either wasn't aware of that fact or wrote Forest Hills as it would be more sensational.
