That is because Dix Hills shares a zip code with Huntington Station.

when the Wyandanch school district was feared to fail, there was a big push to incorporate the entire school district into the Incorporated Village of HHH so that preventive measures could be taken to keep the potential spillover from a Wyandanch shutdown out of HHH.
Why? Why why would it be so bad for Wyandanch kids to attend a nice school district like Half Hollow Hills? Don't they have a right to a good education?
Wyandanch schools should merge with Half Hollow Hills schools - Half hollow needs the diversity. Plus, Congressman Steve Israel (Liberal Democrat who lives in Dix Hills) would welcome his new neighbors with open arms.
You are getting way off topic. I thought that there was misinformation that needed to be clarified to help the original poster, and I think that has been accomplished.
You get good and bad in any neighborhood. Its not the "income" that people make, its the people themselves. There are lots of people that I know whose "income" are not great that I would rather hang with then some of the wealthy snobs I know due to area that I know. There are phonies all over. What I can tell you about HHH schools are that they are top notch. That is a fact and can be looked up anywhere. Its the overall population that makes up the school and the district, and overall it is again top notch.
Also notice how nbres mentioned the percentage of white people and then commented they a substantial number were Jews. Where the heck is he coming from? He needs to just dissappear.
The problem is that there are many still just like him. Funny to because we originally lived in Dix Hills south of the LIE "the poor section of Dix Hills" off of Straight Path (not far from Wheatly), and it was never an issue. We only moved to Melville b/c we needed bigger quarters.
Thank you Clamboy and Michael1969 - it is good to know that some people get it. Diversity has nothing to do with it and I agree that diversity + affluence is a great combination. Wouldn't have moved there otherwise. Nbres - as far as my "miserable" comment - that has everything to do with the arrogance of some residents who need to take it down a big notch.
I think its GREAT to see a community thats both affluent and diverse.
Stony Brook was similar due to the University.
I loved it.
you should check it out....its much nicer than Dix Hills IMHO.

That's one of the things that I love about Stony Brook -- my children have had the opportunity to meet people from many countries, different religious backgrounds, races and cultures. Not only does SUNY play a part in this, but Renaissance Technologies does, too.
I attended school in a small district that was 99% white the year I graduated. The number always hovered between 98-99% during my time there. I applied to the SUNY universities and was in complete culture shock my first year away.
