Thats the mystery
Westchester lacks decent access to Queens and Brooklyn. Lots of people actually work out of there.

Most people leaving LI move to the city for the sake of a fast commute or leave the state. Not a lot of reason to move out of one high cost/low value area into another. My guess would be that Westchester also has an apartment shortage.

This is true.

When I was on a dating site years back, it used to capture everybody within a 25 mile radius of where I lived on LI (so Westchester and Connecticut people would also pop up as matches) despite being separated by the LI Sound.

I always used to tell my friends that the higher quality, more educated, more attractive and wordly people were always up there and the tired washed up ppl were on the Long Island side; so it was unfortunate when one up there was interested in you back since it was way too difficult getting there.

The thing against Westchester and places in CT is that whenever you want to travel or fly you have to schlep it all the way down to JFK or LaGuardia to catch a plane ride. There are no large major airports in Westchester, Putnam, or CT.

I have a friend who lives in Greenwich CT right next to Rye Brook and they travel a lot for work. Every time they need to catch a flight they have to take a car service down to JFK or LaGuardia which, depending on traffic, can be an hour and a half drive. Who wants to do that before or after coming back from a long 4 or 5 hour business flight? Drive another hour and a half back home.

I think a lot of ppl tend to forget this, that yes, while LI and Queens are overcrowded, the proximity to the airports, Manhattan, and in some cases Jersey is beneficial for many people.

However, I do hope to get out of here one day, I live in Huntington/ West Hills and it's getting worse and worse every year.

But they have better access to Manhattan and the rest of the country without having to fight their way out through NYC.

Not necessarily better, but definitely more laid back. Generally speaking people on Long Island are more closely connected to the five boroughs and act as if they live in the five boroughs. Westchester feels distinctly separate and more people reject the concept of being part of NYC. It's honestly a little hard to explain, but people just act differently. I prefer the Westchester mentality, I'm sure some would prefer LI.

But there is Westchester Airport with regular flights to major US cities/Hubs along with Newark in Jersey. From the 151 page thread that continues on the LI Board (//www.city-data.com/forum/long-...ounty-151.html) over the aircraft noise traveling a bit longer to get to the airports may not be such a bad thing.....

VA Yankee,

I agree, I was just saying that if you do live up there and travel for work a lot, (or take a lot of vacations in general) it can be inconvenient constantly high tailing it down to JFK or LaGuardia to try and catch planes from up in Westchester.

Westchester airport is nice, however it has very limited domestic service and no international service.
