This is interesting. If the governor opens businesses so people can return to wok, but leaves schools closed, how does that work for state employees with school aged children? While school is mainly for education, it is also a place where children are all day. In essence, schools have custody of everyone’s kids all day. How can a state employee return to work if there is no school to send their kids to? Most married couples have two parents working. Single parent homes will not be able to return to work. The decision is a living oxymoron, no? Of course, single people of any family without school aged kids are not affected. But the majority of people do have children. Many of them are in unions and are tenured or cannot be fired. What does the governor expect everyone to d9? This isn’t a matter of parents making a bad choice, this govt shutdown if schools was never for seen in the past and never happened.
FWIW, last week Cuomo discussed opening up schools. The plan of how and the various safety precautions are still in the works. However, he indicated that the Transmission rate based on a 14 day rolling average would determine if schools would reopen (and perhaps reclose if it spikes to a certain level). If the rates stay where they are currently, they would re-open, if we happen to spike then we wouldn't if it jumps above 5%.
Ok, Monday morning quarterback who can do better than everyone in charge. So re-opening early worked out?
This is exactly it. Essentials. This is why the garden section of Lowes was closed initially. We don't need the home gardeners making silly unnecessary trips and potentially adding to the crowded hospitals at the time. You need a replacement rubber stopper for your constantly-running toilet? Understood. Art stuff? Let's keep Michaels open for you... because that's so worth it right? Who was the one who wanted DSW?
Can argue gardening is essential ... it can produce food
Of course there is an emotional and political aspect to the Covid-19 response. That'll come into play with LI schools as well.
We do know that a total of 5 LIers died w/Covid-19 over the last 15 days on LI (and 900 died from other causes). And that is part of a general downward LI trend. For some folks that means LI schools must remain closed in September, for others that means LI schools can open in September.
I do think the majority of adults (not withstanding politics and emotion) believe children are at essentially no increased risk of death from Covid-19 here on Long Island with schools opening in September. And they also believe formal education in a school setting is important and going online/distance learning the last three months of the past school year was an enormous drop-off in terms of learning.

We do need to get the schools open but it needs to be done with caution, California was relatively careful in addressing the virus and now they are over 12,000 cases a day. We don't need to end up back at the beginning, we need to be able to react rapidly to any infections. One of the rather large issues now is testing has gone from a few days to get results to 7-12 days because the other states are draining resources. So how do we test students, teachers, bus drivers with that type of lag.

Don't forget the legal aspect. If even one person who became infected could be traced back to the schools the lawsuits would go on forever.
My HOA is dealing with this very issue. We have 2 pools, an indoor and outdoor. Our pool, clubhouse and exercise room is shuttered. The outdoor pool is open, but you have to bring your own chairs, wipes etc. The only thing in our pool area is the pool and safety equipment. We were all asked to sign a waiver and our door key records who is entering the pool area. There is a sign in/out sheet AND a signature required. You also need to sign that you have wiped down all surfaces that you touched. There is a limit to the number that can use the pool at once, but we never have a lot of people using the pool and that number is high enough now that counting is not necessary. The key cards are cross checked to the sign in/out sheet and if you fail to sign the wipe down sheet, you are contacted by a board member who reminds you. There is one reminder and only one, then the key card access is terminated. This policy was suggest by the attorney to limit the exposure of the community to a lawsuit if someone to become sick and sue. The attorney was asked exactly how would someone be able to pin it to this community and his reply was that the laws regarding this are being written as we speak and our best bet is to do all we can to limit exposure. Better than half the HOA's have not opened their pools.
Hahahaha. Your point that wasn't responsive to the point in the first place?
Like the other guy who just didn't get it, "rolling the dice" involves more than just you, because the more who have it, the more likely it spreads, again. Amazing concept that you just won't accept. 99% is not the rate we care about - we don't want to be affected by the virus any more than we already are. How is that not clear by now? Learn from the other states, FFS.
I wouldn’t be surprised. But for another reason...parking! I personally saw about 60 cones being used to not allow parking that were simply run over with cars at the Robert Moses field 5 parking lot yesterday. People are so dang lazy out here it’s pathetic.
