The science-challenged California Governor Newsome has apparently just now (!) realized k-12 schools are not where the virus spreads and k-12 kids aren't dying of the virus. He's opening them up in February-March 2021 notwithstanding the fact California has far more cases than it did during his woke-panic school shutdown way back in March of 2020. I guess it is better late than never but who's gonna make up for the academic shortfall of so many kids (and disproportionally poorer kids)?
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, echoed Newsom’s contention that schools can be opened safely, noting in an online briefing what he called an “almost counter-intuitive” finding that schools “seem to be doing better when it comes to the level of infection” than the community at large.
“If you really want to get society back to some form of normality, one of the first things you have to do is to get the children back in school,” Fauci said.
About the only good thing you can say about that Gov. is he did not pull a Cuomo with the nursing homes so California's death numbers remain relatively low (compared to NY) . (FWIW CA has 2,218,142 total confirmed cases and 24,958 covid-related deaths and New York has 951,000 confirmed cases and 37,256 covid-related deaths).
Now that the COVID infection rate is over 10% in Suffolk County for two consecutive days, does anyone know of plans to keep schools shutdown starting January 4th ?
I remember that NYC was shutting schools if positivity rate was over 3% for a seven day period.
According to suffolkcountyny.gov, the current seven day positivity rate for Suffolk County is 8.9 percent

It would be something between sick and ironic if the pols closed the schools again here on Long Island - moving the kids from a place where virus transmission does not occur to homes (where transmission most often occurs).
The only thing stupider than that would be to send covid-infected patients into nursing homes.

Remember last month a neighborhood in Newark (Ironbound) was completely shut down with curfew and police enforcement when the rates skyrocketed. Now we have 10 percent positivity every day with most towns seeing about thirty new cases daily and it's not a big deal.
We have seen little transmission in the schools when the rates were between one and two percent. I don't know if schools have been staying open in places where rates have been this high ....
