It’s a board of regents ruling it only applies to schools they have no power over anything else. However, can’t say I’d be surprised one bit of down the pike this unhinged state passes a law saying all town names with native heritage has to be approved by local tribes or force a name change.
That's if there are people from those specific tribes to even say anything.
I don't think that would be an issue, as if anything, those names give a reminder of who lived/still lives in said areas.
This is strictly about nicknames nd mascots. I don't think the name of municipalities is the same, as many of the places with those names came from the Native people that once lived or live in those communities. So, those names precede European settlement.
Wanna re-think that relative to the name-change zealots up in Albany?
"The department’s position on this is clear," Frank told Newsday. "If any team, mascots, logos or names have any connection to indigenous nations or peoples, either at the present time or in the past, they need to change their team name."
Beyond that, many of our towns/villages/hamlets/rivers are named after local native chiefs who were swindled out of their lands by white settlers. A painful reminder of past injustices. Those names, with strong connections to indigenous peoples , must be changed. Mineola and Wantagh are two such examples. There are many more.
This is kind if ironic considering how the Native Americans have been treated throughout history. Has anyone been to a reservation lately? How about this story:
The high school I went to had the nickname of Warriors and they changed their logo/mascot about a decade ago, if not longer. Same for another area school with the same nickname. There have been others like Caledonia-Mumford(Raiders with a new logo/brand: https://www.cal-mum.org/domain/374 )have already changed their nicknames and/or logos/brand.
Friends were "Red Raiders" with the old logo back in the day. The new logo with the word "Raiders" doesn't work.
Read in Newsday yesterday, they want to do away with the name Thunderbirds also. A mythical creature. Ridiculous.
Someone ought to tell Ford to rename their iconic vehicle...
