My daughter is transferring to Stony Brook University this fall, and is looking for an aparment in the area that would allow her beloved German Shepherd dog to live there with her. She's having a lot of difficulty finding something. She does have a car, so it could be in a town nearby - not necessarily right in Stony Brook. Does anyone have any suggestions for her?

Student housing has postings of apartments for rent in the area. The landlords post them. Have her call student housing to see what they have.

Much of the housing in and about the university are apartments carved out of single family homes. If she can't find anything in Stony Brook, Setauket, or St James, she could expand her search to Lake Grove, Centereach, Port Jeff, Port Jeff Station, Smithtown. (Centereach and Port Jeff Station have a couple of sketchy areas.)

What's the furthest she is willing to travel?

Thanks for the info - handy to have from someone who knows the area. She'd be willing to travel, if she needed to in order to find a dog-friendly place. But I'm sure it would be better for her to be closer, so she could go home and let the dog outduring the day.
