But y'know if you really want to get into it, does anybody remember "Billy Blake" and "TSS" stores?
I don't remember Billy Blake but I absolutely remember TSS. There was one in Middle Village by Christ the King HS. My parents bought me a 'Zimm Zamm' tennis ball/paddle thingy there in the mid-1970s. My husband worked in the record department there in 1984. He used to spend his entire (not that it was a whole lot though) paycheck on records. He also bought me an ankle chain (remember those?!) there for a Christmas present in 1981.
Where was the Bohacks in Setauket? as it where the Blue Jay Market was?
There was no Bohack in Setauket......only in PJ village and Stony Brook.....Setauket only had Blue Jay, Hill's and Finast.....My dad worked at the one in PJ Sta. and I remember he used to get pissed at my mom when she shopped the other 3....( the ol' 5 finger employee discount )...
Bohack's in Sea Cliff, Nassau County, was located at the NE corner of Roslyn and Sea Cliff Avenues. The single story building still stands, and is occupied by a dental office, in front, and a restaurant at the rear.
I frequented the store over the period, 1949-1962, buying groceries for my parents, often in the mornings, before school. The store had two swing door entrances off Sea Cliff Avenue, with no formal window display. There were two registers, and three aisles. At the back was a meat counter, with two butchers on duty. [They used to scare me by showing me the lobsters.] At the front was a tended produce section, although that position was deleted later on. The store was usually open at 7:00 a.m. on weekdays. The shopping carts were tiny by modern standards. I remember the staff as especially friendly. As a teenager, I once asked them about a job, and they agreed to hire me, although I never actually worked there.
Playing with matches one day, I once set fire to some dry grass near the rear of the store. As the fire started to get out of control, some of the Bohack staff came to my rescue and put out the fire with a bucket of water. This incident has remained our secret, at least until now.
I moved from the area in 1965, and did not witness the store's unfortunate closing.

We were just talking about Bohack's the other night. We always shopped there and one thing that will forever live in my memory was the cheesecake they sold. I've never had another one like it anywhere, ever. Is there any where that I could get the recipe? I make a NY cheesecake- recipe from the Waldorf Astoria, and although indecently rich and delicious, it doesn't compare. If there's any way that you could help me with locating the recipe, I surely would appreciate it!!
My Dad (Daniel DiPierro) worked for Bohack for about 30 years, until it went out of business, and he also managed a store that survived after they closed down....He was first Produce Manager, then Store Manager in Rocky Point and later Managed in Port Jeff Station (in the Woolworth's plaza), then became a District Manager (Bethpage, Port Washington, etc)...until the very end. My siblings and I all worked summers at Ronkonkoma, Shirley, Port Jeff Sta and StonyBrook at various times...I helped open The Village in Farmingville as well...Daniel DiPierro, Jr.
