Levittown won't offer you the diversity that you mentioned at all. I don't see it as a good match for your family seeking diversity. (The school district is 1% african american and 8% spanish))

You may feel more confortable with Baldwin or Valley Stream. Valley Stream is very diverse with a pretty decent school district. You can find almost every ethnic group in Valley Stream, without too much of a majority of any one type.

Although, 300k isn't going to get you much at all in most LI towns with decent school districts.

Someone here mentioned Wyandanch. Stay away from there...terrible school and very crime ridden. It isn't very diverse either (it is 98% african american).

Just want to thank all of the nice people who took time to offer advice. I will definitely keep your comments in mind if we decide to purchase in long island. I'm a 1st semester Nursing Student, and I'm torn if we should act now to lock in the great rates, or wait until I finish school. Again, thanks to you all.

you should try Valley Stream, the prices of homes have gone down considerably in that area. I prefer the area that is zoned for District 24 (Valley Stream South) or the small section that is zoned for Hewlett schools. But that is my informed opinion.

Try Baldwin. There are great values to find with a little looking, welcoming environment and a ton of diversity so no matter your background you'll find it comfortable. Schools are very good.

Somehow, I seriously doubt you would be suggesting Cryme-danch to the McManus or Salvatore family moving here from Poughkeepsie with a 300k budget....
It was a joke... some folks got it, you obviously didn't. No need to have a stroke.

Default Understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland"

Felicia327, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:

What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".

Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".

NYS Geographic Glossary and Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

On LI, You Ain't Where You Think You Are, rev. 1 may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

You can get a fact sheet for any city, village or hamlet on Long Island by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the city, village or hamlet for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".

You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the city, village or hamlet you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.

When you do find a house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

I'd recommend checking out Baldwin, Levittown, and hicksville. However, if you are in nursing school to become an RN, I would suggest waiting unless there is something really pushing for now. I would think your income would go up significantly and it would help the budget.

Although there are houses out there, 300K is a tight budget for a house in most areas with a decent School district if you want something in nice shape. You'll most likely be at the top of your budget and the condition won't generally be what you'd like.

300,000 can get you some decent houses... You might want to save some more money... For the repairs/updates to the houses... Also, the taxes in Nassau are much higher than in the city... So be prepared for that... Someone mentioned earlier school districts to stay away from Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Westbury (even though in pains me to say the school isnt good because I graduated from Westbury High School in 2004) The rest of the school districts in Nassau are fine... Someone mentioned avoided Lawarence, the situation their is weird but its not a terrible district... Most schools offer some sort of diversity especially in the younger grades...
