Many people are evolved enough (or just laid-back enough) to understand it's no big deal. The gene pool and city demographic is very multi-ethnic, even in rough neighborhoods.
And honestly, there are those people who disapprove, but know that's it's un-pc to make a big stink about it.
California intolerant is still more restrained than back-East/Midwest intolerant.

Decades of racial heavy-handedness from LAPD, the riots, the movie Crash, high profile gang-related hate crimes,
and the annual race riots at LAUSD high schools (it's 2008! here we go again), do indeed have people back East
...from what I've gathered hanging out with people, thinking that L.A.'s tolerant reputation is very questionable, even undeserved.
