Hello all,

I'm strongly considering a new job working at the Terminal Island Prison. I'm a single male, age 41. I need advice as to where would be a good place to live. I could potentially stay for 5 years there. Should I rent first? or go ahead and buy a house?

I'd like a safe, private neighborhood to live in. I've heard about the terrible traffic, so is it realistic to consider commuting to the job? I'm also in the military and will probably be going to Los Angeles AFB somewhat frequently. Any suggestions/input? Anyone have any input on working at Terminal Island? Thanks.

Dean.

Definitely rent for such a short period of time, especially in this market. I'd look in the Torrance or Lomita area. You can take the Vincent Thomas Bridge to Terminal Island from San Pedro and still be close to the base.

What is your price range or rental budget?

Price range? Well, my salary is going to be around $100K per year. I don't need something that's big, it doesn't take much to please me. I know I don't like doing yard work, How plentiful are condos? What I do need is security and privacy. Are there any gated communities near there? What would be the median house price?

What would a nice one bedroom apartment cost?

This info is available on google, zillow, and apartment databases.

Here's an example of what you should have looked up:

You could get a nice ocean view condo in downtown. Or you could do the same in Belmont Shore if you wanted a slower pace.

Your salary should allow you to live in Downtown Long Beach comfortably. I know you said you'll only be working five years, but if you think you might stay after a year, I'd buy. Over the next few years, real estate will go for a steal.
